Seat Height

Hi All,

I have a 2004 1.4 tdi 75 SE which, as far as I know, is standard from factory with manual cloth seats.
I am 1.88m or 6'' 2" in old money on a good day but a chronic back and neck condition mean I struggle to bend from the waist. This will only get worse and I am struggling to get out of the car. Currently I just about make it by scraping what hair I have left on the door rubber. Does anyone know if any of the interior seating options are lower than standard SE cloth seats? Even 20 mm would make a worthwhile difference. Failing this does anyone know if it would be possible to alter the seat carrier assembly and lose some height?

All responses gratefully received.

silly question but you have got the seat height at its lowest..... Not much help otherwise

Yes, 99.9% certain but will check if any more adjustment. May make things easier to adjust the rake of the seat when getting out but not ideal solution.

There's bags of head and shoulder room in these cars. I take it you've got the seat bases on their lowest setting ? (Repeatedly push down the right hand lever on the base of the drivers seat until it stops).

I think the two seat types (Sport and SE) are both the same basic height, but the bolsters on the Sport make it more difficult to get out of them. If that's what you've got, SE seats might work better for you. The difference has just been documented with pictures here.

I find this difficult to understand. My (leather) SE seats easily accommodate friends who are 6'6"" tall, both front and rear, and the ease of access is often remarked on by taller passengers. Like other posters, I suspect you need to do nothing more than drop the height of your existing seat using the built-in lever.

I've just double checked the seat adjustment is at its lowest setting and can confirm it is an SE spec cloth seat. I agree that the car offers fantastic accommodation. I fear the problem is simply that I cannot bend and the distance between the seat height and door frame is too small for me hence the quest for alternatives. I won't give up on the car until I can no longer manage the discomfort or find a solution.

Thanks for your replies.

I’m 5’ 11’’ and when I injured my back I wasn’t able to bend enough to get into the car without dragging my ear along the rubber seal. It takes a fair bit of waist bending and head forward to get in any car.

I found a small pad which allowed me to rotate like a Lazy Susan helped. I could back into the car and lower myself down onto the pad then spin and lift my legs in. Not very cool but it worked for me.

Good luck.
