have just had a quote for circa £300 for second service plus £300 for cambelt before they have even seen the car ( Se TDI 2001 63k mls) anyway am very unsure of staying with audi for service as I fear furhter costs for MOT now due and possibly tyres x2 etc...

what have others done when faced with upward of £1,000 for a service and bits...? I am not very mechanically gifted so self care not an option am in the south west but will travel if saving potential enough ?? all tips welcomed thanks

Well the car is outside it's warranty, so you're free to have the work done where ever you wish now. £300 seems a little high from what I've read, though the best is still expensive at £240. Often these local specialist (VW, Audi) garages are very good. With regards to the cam-belt, 65k miles is about right, but I’m not exactly sure when the A2’s is recommended to be changed and £300 for it seems about right for an Audi dealer. Generally my advice is to shop around for a local VW/Audi specialist to do this work for you.

2004 1.4 TDi (90) SE, Cobalt Blue, Climate control, Cruise control, DIS, Sport seats, Winter pack, Symphony II.

Can't help with the prices, but maybe with the mileage for the cambelt.
My 2003 Tdi was just in for 1st service (at 51k km / 32k miles) and they told me to return for a new cambelt at 90k km (56k miles).
So from my point of view, I think they're late with yours. Not much of a saving though, if you can use your cambelt for 9k miles more....

Mind you, these are figures from a Dutch dealership.

General advice on cambelts (on interference engines) is take no chances and change at 40k regardless of manufacturers instructions. an interference engine is one where a broken cambelt means an engine re-build when it breaks.

If it is non-interference then it may be worth taking the chance. I don't know which the A2 engine are.

Suggest you post the question on here http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/threads.htm?pg=0&f=4

2002 1.4 Petrol SE, silver with climate control for SWMBO (1.4 Petrol SE, Ebony Black, grey leather, heated seats, climate, opensky, five spoke alloys on order) Honda Accord Tourer 2.2 iCDTi for me.

Well I decided to wait the extra 10k km (6k miles) and have the cambelt changed at the same
time as the 2nd VSI service.. One of the reasons for choosing the A2 was its extended service interval, I'm going in once every 50k km (31k mi), no sooner - if I can help it.

I called at my second dealer today and quoted £316 for the service then £367 for the cambelt ( cost of the belt itself £45 !!!) anyway as said out of warranty and am looking to shop around now but don't want to leave it too long cambelt that is is it worth it to head over to france or belgium I wonder and have it done there ? it looks better value. what are others doing ? simply accpeting the circa £1,000 for belt , service and anything else Audi can come up with i do feel incensed by this issue... further thoughts very welcomed thanks

I did a quick search in the forum and found the following prices for a service:
Bath £250
Slough £254
Sutton Coldfield £215
Bradford £207

So it seems like you could save quite a bit of cash if you shop around.

2004 1.4 TDi (90) SE, Cobalt Blue, Climate control, Cruise control, DIS, Sport seats, Winter pack, Symphony II.
