Shell Fuelsave

Just filled my FSi with fuel saver petrol. What is the deal, how scientific do we need to be, do I just rest the DIS and let that do the work or do I have to write down the litres (I still have the receipt) and then the odometer and work out my average MPG? Could be fun to see if my DIS is accurate, I need to get out more.

AFAIK the DIS is calibrated to the injectors, so should be quite accurate, though some members report ~5% difference.

I'd just stick with your DIS and do before and after measurements.

I've been measuring the mpg since I bought my car and notice significant changes even when I thought I was driving the same speed on the same roads. So it may be quite difficult to measure the small gains as been claimed by Shell.

Thanks Will, I thought those ruthlessly efficient Germans would have the DIS wired into something so it would be more accurate than my bumbling maths.

I will post the data asap.

I got a voucher for £2 off today, so will try it next time i fill up. Last time I used normal unleaded it did not seem to last as long, so will be interesting. I know when the tank gets down to 1/4 full, i have travelled at most 270miles (petrol, and heavy foot - I know diesel is better....!) Will be interesting to see how much difference I get. Also been measuring my MPG, so will see if there is a massive change. This fill up, I am trying to be more 'green', and will do the same on my next fill up!

I have just used my first full tank of Shell fuel Save.

Car is Standard 75bhp 1.4tdiSE with 17" RS4 & various 204 40 tyres.

I have the 34 ltr tank.

The car was loaded with 2 adults and 2 kids and weekend luggage.

We did the best mileage ever 405 miles before the fuel light came on, and 408.7 before I filled up, at the same garage same pump as the fill before.

No of litres used 27.5

MPG 67.56

I had over a gallon left, so 500 miles should be possible just.

My previous best was 66.7, also on shell, but just std.

Conclusion, if it were more expensive, i wouldn't buy it, but at the moment it is cheaper than tesco, so I will use it, whilst ever it is the cheapest.

Still annoyed that the car won't do better MPG. Audi said it would do 81mpg. It wont!

VW say the Polo Blue Motion will do 81mpg, it does, and can do even more!

That throws out all the talk, about well it's done on rollers, it's unrealstic, its simulated etc...

As I have always said, if Audi say it can do 81mpg on the extra urban cycle (and that was before Shell fuel save), it should be possible to do better travelling at 56mph ish on a smooth level Motorway on a wind free day. I don't think anyone has even got close let alone beat it.

Ps. If the Polo, and the 1.2 Tdi can beat the official figures, why can't the 1.4 tdi?

Rant over. Still a great car.

I normaly fill up at bp. I will have to give this shell fuelsave a punt. It has to be worth a try as it cost no more than the normal fuel.

I take yout points, but don't forget that the average speed of the combned cycle is only 39mph.

By best so far is 78mpg. Though that was a one off and I more typically get low 70s on motorway runs at 60mph.

On humpy we only use V Power unless its unavoidable an then we only part fill till we find a Shell station.
On the Toyota minibus, we use regular diesel and my preference is for Shell. I have been using the new fuel save for the last 4-5 tanks and we have noticed a better range of about 25-40miles between fills. It uses the older style pump and injector fuel delivey system.
I do record the use and consumption on a spreadsheet but planning and being away for the holoidays has seen the "to do" pile on my desk grow. There is no doubt in my mind that there are fuel savings to be had with this fuel. I also noticed better fuel consumption on the A2 when we switched to V Power.

I left an Esso garage on regular diesel and hit the motorway section of the north circular road in rolling traffic at around 55mph while it was raining heavily and windy with my partner + 2 kids and weekend luggage. My average in normal city drving is 50 to 58mpg once the car is warm.

However on the north circular I eventually hit 80mpg on the dis. I feel the car would clearly have exceeded your 81mpg yard stick if the car been unloaded and with the stereo & climate control off.

I think it’s just a question of luck. I have a TDI 75 sport also on 17” yet have no problem getting high mpg if I fuss about with my driving style. However it did take time. In rolling conditions as mentioned at roughly 55mph, it took around 15minutes for my DIS to go from 58mpg to 80mpg. Also this came straight back down once I hit 70mph+ to mid 60’s low 70’s mpg on the M4, but still great, and all this was achived purely by chance (rolling traffic).

I have been using this now for the last 3 fill ups, mine is a 75BHP TDi, I normally get around 57mpg out of my car & I mostly drive at around 40-60MPH on A & B roads, unfortunately I have a fuel leak on my car at the moment, but I have noticed I'm getting around 20 mile more out of a tank even with a fuel leak.

Buy the way I'm having someone look at the fuel leak tomorrow :)
