Sidelight only works with dipped or full beam on?

Hi.
The drivers side sidelight (uk car 1.4tdi ATL) will only come on when either the dipped or main beam is turned on. Left hand-side sidelight fine. Replaced the headlight unit & same happens so the fault is prior to the unit itself.
I don’t know why the sidelight would work when the dipped or main beams come on other than obviously getting power from these other lights? I wouldn’t have thought it was a relay as none of the lights would come on?

any help would be really appropriated.

Do the parking lights work normally? i.e. ignition off, indicator left should put the side light on left, same on right.
Also I assume that this affects both front and rear? Or just the front?
Apart from that, it does sound a bit like the lighting switch might be at fault. Are you able to borrow one from another member local to you to try?

Hi mate.
Parking lights on left work fine. Parking light on right doesn’t work but not checked the rear lights and I’ll do that and report back. I have a spare light switch and will replace to see if it helps.
thanks for the advice ?? & I’ll see what happens.

Hi Sheffield_Mat,
I would check you’ve got 12v to the light in question before doing anything else as the cable have been known to breakdown inside the light, check the continuity of the earth cable from the lamp holder to the plug on head lamp unit.
Hope that helps
Keith.
