Silent alarm?

I have only once managed to trigger the alarm (absently locked it with the boot open and the ultrasonics tripped) but only the hazard lights flashed, no beep beep. The car doesn't beep on locking either. Full VCDS job to re-enable?

It’s likely that your alarm sounder unit has died. It’s not an uncommon occurrence.

Cheers,

Tom

Thanks Tom, I have a spare Golf 4 one somewhere (if the plug is the same? Guessing they are the same across the group)

The A2 uses an A3 alarm sounder, so there’s definitely some parts sharing. Whether the Golf also uses the A3 unit, I don’t know.
There are two generations of alarm sounder used in the A2, but they’re cross-compatible.

Cheers,

Tom

How easy is this to get to Tom?

Hi James,

It involves removing the large interior panel on the right-hand side of boot, which in turn requires the removal of other surrounding trim panels. So, the level of difficulty depends on your familiarity with this process. It's the kind of thing that I do on autopilot whilst holding conversation, but if you've not done it before, it'll require some studying and concentration on not breaking anything. :)

Cheers,

Tom

Thanks Tom.

You're welcome. You know I'm just up the M6 from you, and happy to assist. :)
Hi Tom,
Its actually Danene that has that problem. Came up on a scan I did for her.
But on another note (forgive the pun) I fitted a suplimental horn a few years ago as I was not willing to take of the bumper to access to the dying frog of a horn I had. This has recently stopped working. I've probed the horn connectors but there is not 12v there. Fuse is ok.
Any ideas?
James

Its not the same unit as a Golf 4 btw. I have yet to put all the trim back in, but thats a way off as OSS repair and headlining are on the cards.

Any ideas?
I’m obviously happy to help Danene as well. :)

If there is no 12V at your horn when the airbag is pushed, it could be any one of a variety of things (standard answer with almost all car problems!)... the horn plate in the steering wheel (unlikely), the relay (quite possible, but an uncommon failure) or the wiring.

Cheers,

Tom

Thanks for the feedback regarding the Mk4 Golf unit. Good to know.
Also apologies for the swerving topics in your thread. ?
