Silly rubber peel

Is their any solvent about that can easily remove the silly rubbery ?film?coating That's on the plastic trims on the glove box, ashtray (storage tray in my car!) cup holders ect? It's peeling off everywhere and looks horrible Iv managed to scrape it off the climate control panel but it takes along time!

Thanks,

Scott,

I know what does strip it off easily, those California Scents Carscents airfresheners, had a one sitting in the back ashtray/small cubby sitting on its side, noticed the whole coating had bubbled up and was barely holding on. Glad I never put it anywhere more noticeable. Unfortunately, there are no ingredient list on the side. Maybe it's some kind of alcohol? Suppose to be Organic/All natural, Anyone know?

Yes the coating does come off using a toothbrush and several of the spray bathroom/kitchen cleaners sold in the supermarkets. I covered the removal of the so called soft coating I had on my 2001 A2 SE purchased in May 2013 so you should be able to view it by doing a search. Once softened with the spray and agitated with the soft toothbrush it can be washed off with warm water and wrung out in a bucket.I did all the lower dashboard, glovebox, central tunnel sides etc. My car is metallic silver with light grey upholstery The soft coating and the plastic beneath is mid grey with a 'leather type' visual texture to it. It now feels clean and not sticky as it originally was when bought. I have not cleaned the similar 'black' coating of the dashboard as it has not become sticky like the grey lower areas but is softer.

Do try it first on a test area. You can remove the fuse holder cover and do that first as you test area. I removed all carpets and side panels to find out where I had water leaks and was able to dry everything out. This made cleaning of all these panels much easier than trying to do them in situ. It's a must if you want to restore your glovebox to have a fully working interior light etc. The panels/box etc needs to be free of the sricky coating before you can solvent weld it together.

DO NOT TRY CLEANING IT WITH THINNERS OR OTHER AGGRESIVE SOLVENTS. I use different surface coatings and bonding agents in my job, both applied by hand and airbrush..... many used in the aircraft industry and have done so for over 45 years so I'm not without experience.

Thank you for the detailed info I'll take it all apart and do it out of the car. It really lets the car down at the moment!
