Site downtime

Hi folks,

I am involved in rebuilding our server room this weekend - trying to reduce the size from 30 cabinets to 8. Anyway - we'll be unplugging everything - so the site will be down at various times starting tonight and completing on Sunday evening.

Apologies in advance for any inconvenience this may cause - I'll do my best to keep the site up for as long as possible.

Ben

The downtime is the ONLY way of keeping us away from this site :D

Thanks for your behind the scenes hard work.

Regards
SARGE

Hi chaps - all rebuilds are complete now. There might be the odd 10 min downtime next week as we get new UPS batteries - but you probably won't even notice this. That was a massive task - 23 hours of cabinet strip down/rebuild/visit to casualty after slicing my arm open on a suspended floor panel. PS if anyone wants any free full-height racks - let me know by Weds as we'll be skipping the remaining 15 racks.

Alan - our server room was originally designed to accomodate 25 massive Sun workstations (about 1/3 of a cabinet each). These have mostly been disposed of now - replaced by rubbishy Dell slabs. They don't have the built quality of Sun kit - but are tiny in both power and size. We have a new problem now of too much kit per rack - one rack has 20 machines in it - most of which have redundant power supplies - that's a lot of power points for a couple of 16A circuits.

Well done and thanks for all of your time and commitment Ben.

Hope your arm is okay - speaking of which, I felt like one of mine was missing this weekend with no site access.

Cheers,

Darren

LOL!!:) I know how you felt!:) Great job Ben. Is it just my imagination , or is the site loading faster now as well?

Don't Diss the Dell servers:), we have about 500 of them and have only had 2 hardware failures in 3 years!

They dont have the build quality of Sun, but neither do they have the price tag...

Almost removed all our Sun boxes now, our Datacentre has halved in space and heat, so greener all round ;)

We EBAY'd our cabs, recycling is cool

Thanks Ben, given my field of work, I know that must be massive job! This site already has great up time, being more power efficient is even better! Thanks again.

Are Sun still going? What about SGI? I used to work on their very-good-idea but didn't catch on Windows NT-based Workstations - had a lot of fancy tech in them but they weren't popular.

SGI are pretty much dead, their name and IP still lives on ... purchased by some corp that thought the rep could translate into hard cash.

BTW, I don't envy your task of consolidation. Get some blades going (although by the sounds on things you should be kept away from sharp items :p ).

What OS/Virtualization setup you got things running on?
