Slow first start after standing

Key fob battery has nothing to do with the immobiliser but if it works it works lol
If it was the immobiliser causing the engine not to run, the immobiliser symbol would be showing.
Don’t know about the A2, but with the Mk1 TT, the engine starts, and runs for a few seconds, then stops, with immo symbol showing.
Mac.

Check if the rev counter moves, (200/300 rpm), when cranking. If it does, the crank sensor is fine, even if the engine does not fire up.

I've noticed that too, but I think it's normal, as you can even hear the fuel pump buzzing, and getting ready for a few seconds after turning the key to 2nd position, just before starting it up.
If I start the engine right away, it fires up, but usually needs a 1-2 seconds to catch up to normal rpm.
As it was mentioned above, turn key, seat belt on, then start the engine. By then the fuel pump finishes it's thing too. Apart from bad battery issue, this way always started right up.
Most A2 fuel pumps are around 20 years old, you gotta take that into account as well. Considering that, I think it's doing it's job wonderfully.

Does the manual specify the starting sequence?

I suspect that this IS a design feature where the various sensors have to check in for the engine management to select the fuelling map. Would say the time taken is the same as the warning lights check sequence.

Why try to fix something that is not broken?

Yes it's around the same time. It might be different to other petrol cars, but as long as it works good otherwise, I'd just wait 2-3 seconds and then start the engine, literally around the same time you fasten the seat belt.

Also feasible that when the ignition key is turned off the fuel system is depressurised back to the tank to enable the engine to shut off cleanly and not diesel. When you turn the key back on the system is repressurised and sensors check prior to starting.

Took the injectors out today, wanted to see if I had a leaking injector which when shut off would allow petrol to drain back to tank.No luck, they seem fine ( I ran the pump with the injectors still in the rail and fuel line attached - no sign of leaks). Still struggling to understand.

Not much to understand, just this is how it works. All of the 1.4 petrol engines do that. I got used to it after a few weeks. Now it'd be strange if there weren't any noise when I turn the key.

Thanks, I just cannot believe that the car was designed so that I would need to pause and wait for the ‚OK‘ signal before cranking the engine. While it’s not a big inconvenience I wonder if it’s an indication of a problem developing. Time will tell, currently I have no bright ideas and will live with the process. Fingers crossed.

Hi Paul ... an Audi designer was probably tasked with coming up with a novel way to enhance the experience of owning a premium car, perhaps as a reassurance that you're good to go before setting off.
This together with the service flap for oil and water is an example of how I believe they were marketing the A2 back then when the car was well ahead of its time.
If it's any comfort to you ... this system check or priming has never manifested itself as anything more than a three second delay in my twenty years of ownership.
