Slow to react throttle

My 1.4 petrol has a sluggish throttle response. Push down the peddle & there is a delay before the engine revs up so difficult to maintain say 2000 rpm. Any ideas please?

Just a quote question when did this start. It happened to my 1.4 once but stopped on a restart and hasn’t done it since

Hi, I bought the car 3 years ago but never used it. It was doing it then & still is. It’s going to be my daily driver soon I hope.

Hi guys, I have same trouble on my 1.4 petrol with AUA engine. I bought it three months ago. When I bought it I had lambda fail so cannot judge engine behaviour.
I left the car for long at the mechanic workshop for a long list of jobs ( time belt, clutch, services belts, full maintenance, etc). The car has no engine error, I have vcds and check it but the min rpm is quite low, around 600rpm, and the throttle reaction is very slow. One I push it there is a delay before engine goes up. I don’t know if there are some engine adaption that could solve this issue… or if this problem could be created from egr or throttle valve.
I have VCDS and ODIS too..
thanks for yr suggestions…

There is a lot of free movement in the A2 throttle unfortunately. The fly by wire setup is not the most enthusing.

So it means it is a normal situation?

It is possible that a general clean and then some energetic use may help a small amount for low-down responsiveness. However, the 1.4i is also notable for being much more responsive at the top end (>3000rpm) than lower down - it took me nearly 20 years to realise this with our car as I normally drive Tdi-engined cars!

My 1.4 petrol is exactly the same, the throttle response low down is terrible but fine when higher in the rev range. I think it's a common problem with this variant. I will clean my throttle body at some point but I don't think it will make a lot of difference other than a clean throttle body?

You can buy a device that connects between the connector for the throttle pedal and the loom that goes into the car. It’s a trick device that improved the throttle response.

It obviously does nothing to increase power but makes the throttle open more for less pressure.

Funny you mention this Steve, I was looking for one on my old Insignia and I wondered if they did one for the A2, thanks for the heads up mate I will be purchasing one at some point.

Thanks for all info !! I will try a clean of throttle valve and if it doesn’t change will consider pedal box. Do you know if it is possible to make an engine map to change some values and getter a better pedal reply ?
On newer cars ( I have a A4 B8 ) it is possible to modify most of value by uploading a different maps ..

Don't forget to buy a new throttle body gasket before you remove it to clean, ive just ordered one from ebay, the brand i went for is Febi.

Anecdotally one of the better performance improvements on the AUA comes with a proper stainless exhaust - see @steve_c 's thread

Robin I've just had a stainless system fitted and sadly it has not helped with the throttle response in the low rev range where the issue tends to be, I think a clean of the throttle body may help but really a pedal box is the only way to get the throttle to respond instantly, I've seen one used on an Insignia and the difference is night and day, the only down side is cost as they are normally over £200 to buy but well worth the investment.

On ours fitting a new throttle body and EGR as well as refurbished injectors and then eventually plugs, cables and new coil made a huge difference between it not running well at all to being about as good as it can be (at 190-odd-thousand miles and after years of neglect) - and without having a 'performance' exhaust to compare back to back, I don't think we'd get much more without spending some serious cash that I don't have. For a car that does 3-4k per year commuting and runs to the shops etc., not really worth it ; the main thing for me has been learning how to drive it in contrast to the Tdi-engined cars. I've mentioned here before - I got used to an AUA or similar being pretty gutless low down in my Mum's (new) Polo around 20 years ago compared to the rather torquier-feeling (but not as revvy) 1.4 8-valve engine in the Polo that preceded it, and never bothered trying to thrash it to extract the performance back then (I only became a boy racer once I grew up!!). It was only on this one once I'd fitted all the new bits that I realised there was an entire dimension of performance above 3500rpm that I'd never realised existed hitherto, and with the suspension refurb and light front end it is very nice on country roads. I wouldn't want to drive it to Plymouth from here though ; that is what my Tdi is for. Agree about properly-installed cruise from @timmus though - it makes motorway journeys a breeze.
