small hole in washer bottle

My A2 has had a few scrapes under its front bumper. I think the design with the downward facing lip means that its easy to park with the front over a kerb and then snag it when reversing out. It looks like the previous owners did this a few times, and that the bumper got slightly warped underneath. Last night in a car park I also snagged the bumper, so today, having a day off, I decided to take a look.

At some point someone has removed the plastic engine guard and refitted it without correctly interlocking it with the bumper, adding to the amount the lip of the bumper sticks down. When I set about removing the engine guard securing screws to correct this, screenwash started to pour onto me.

It turns out that two extra self tapping screws had been added to Audi's factory fit fixings to try and better secure the underside of the bumper. One of these had gone straight into the washer bottle, and had probably been sitting there happily for a few years. I always wondered why the washer bottle needed topping up so regularly!

In the end, I let the bottle completely drain and used a bit of araldite plumber's putty to plug the hole, we'll see how long it lasts. Maybe I should just have put the screw back in?

In my old motorcycle courier days, we used to use self-tapping screws as temporary puncture repairs!!! If you were really posh, you put a bit of silicone in first, then the screw (pan head or countersink preferred) and the tyre would last as a get you home (and back, and to London etc!!).

If you need another bottle, I have one in the garage, replaced when I installed headlamp washers.

Cheers,

Mike

Thanks Mike, I'll see how the patch repair holds up, and might take the offer up if this one develops a leak again.

I must admit it did pass my mind when I realised what was happening that perhaps I'd inadvertently removed a drain plug!

Prehaps screws in the tyre could be an easy way to balance your wheels!?
