Sound of 1,4 TDI engine

Hi all,
I'm a newbie on this site and would like to buy Audi A2 1,4 TDI. I think it's a very unusual and nice car and in my country (Czech republic) very rare too (it was so expensive, especially for Czechs). I have read almost all informations, have seen many pictures, but I haven't heard the sound of 1,4 TDI engine... You know, I'm very keen on cars and find an engine sound important.;) So, does anyone have a video or an audio file with the sound of this TDI (acceleration)?I found one video on YouTube yesterday, but the sound is not clear and that movie is a bit short. I would be very grateful for such a file...

Sorry to say, but if you’re looking for appealing engine/exhaust sound, please don’t buy an Diesel A2.

Buy the 1.6 FSI A2 instead. Equipped with the stainless duplex exhaust made by BN-Pipes (German high quality exhaust maker) the 1.6 engine sound really becomes lusty.

Please do a search for BN-Pipes here in this forum. You will find several links...

As for the 3-cylinder Diesel sound, it is virtually not improvable! Small engine displacement combined with the Diesel technology doesn’t work in terms of car sound sadly.


The Polo 9N 1.4 TDI engines for instance are more or less identical to our 1.4 TDIs, both in technical and acoustic manner. Just listen to that wonderful ;) 1.4 TDI sound:

Oh, I don't know about that! With a suitable custom exhaust and a de-cat, the 1.4 TDi can sound quite fruity (as folks at the recent curry social may testify to).

When I get the chance, I'll try to get a recording of the sound - not easy though on your own!!

what I was alluding to was mainly that annoying “standard“ Diesel engine rattle sound (clearly audible in the linked Polo vid above).

It is a hard job to modify the exhaust tone to achieve a pleasantly louder + more agressive tone on our TDIs, so that it subjectively does drown out that typical Diesel rattle (within the A2 cabin as well as outside).

Anyway, I think all TDI people here would love to hear a sound sample of your PipeWerx custom made exhaust upgraded tank! :)

I hope you find one - it will certainly get lots of interesting attention from others in the Czech Republic.

If you search on YouTube for Audi A2 you will find 159 hits. I recall seeing a few which are taken from inside the vehicle whilst being driven. Some are likely to be a TDi .
