Spare Wheel Requirement?

MOI

Just spotted audi a2 spare wheels for sale on ebay at £109 each. I know its a sensible option to have but is it a legal requirement to have one?

Just have the foam at the mo that I don't want to rely on as its never been used in 20 years!

Makes no odds. Most brand new cars only come with the goo nowadays, or at best a "biscuit" There is nothing stopping you having a spare either in the car or at home.

The only time cars have had to retrospectively been made to comply with legislation that came into effect after they were first registered is when windscreen washers became compulsory for all cars with fixed windscreens - other than that, they only have to continue to comply with the legislation in place at the time.

If anyone buys a spare wheel, either a space-saver or a full size spare (which is an option and they just about fit.
PLEASE, please, ensure that the wheel is secured safely.
The last thing you want if you ever have an accident (God forbid) is a heavy wheel flying around inside the car.

I think the only "requirement" is that if you have a spare it must be legal.
Only for MoT or if you use it. I used to find it odd that a spare tyre below minimum tread would cause an MoT fail though removing said spare prior to the MoT would allow a pass.
I typically don't carry a spare though I do carry goo (genuine and holts) and a puncture repair kit, like this.
I have used it, repair has held air for many months.

I guess the MOT logic is that there is no point carrying a spare if you don’t intend to use it and if you had a flat you would.
So they see it as you intending to use an illegal tyre.

I agree that it does seem odd and daft, but there is a tiny bit of logic in there somewhere.
