Speakers intermittently cutting in and out.

Good morning, hope all are having a good weekend.

Apologies if there’s a dedicated thread for this already (I’d welcome directions to it if so) I’m having some issues with my front door speakers cutting in and out temperamentally, I’m assuming it’s wiring that’s worked loose or connections but not sure.

Can anyone recommend a reasonable priced option for getting it looked at and repaired in South London or outside even?

My model is a 2005 A2 SE 1.4 petrol with the standard stereo (non Bose).

Thanks for your time. Al

Is it all speakers, or, just one side back and front, or both fronts or both rears?
*Is the radio the original Concert/Chorus, or aftermarket?
With a bit more info, we can probably point you in the right direction.
*Sorry, just realised you've said it's the standard radio.

Also, are you sure the radio itself is still on, when the sound goes off?

Hello @PlasticMac thanks very much for your reply, all good questions.

* It seems to affect both front right and left speakers, that crackle or go quieter from time to time, though not all the time.

* I think the radio is consistently on rather than being weak signal or cutting out, because sometimes one speaker sounds fine and the other not whilst the radio is playing.

* I think it’s the original fitted standard Symphony variant of stereo. I’ll double check that.

Good question about the rear speakers, I’d only noticed the front but will double check that if I can.

Cheers

Do not know if the later models all had rear speakers as standard. Certainly some of the earlier model with the chorus radio cassette were available with only front speakers from the factory.

I would remove the unit from the dash and check for loose or damaged wiring at the plugs. Then check for damage to the wiring in the front doors and the speaker connections. Either remove the rear door trims or try to use a good torch to see if there are speakers fitted in the rear doors..

Another issue is to do with finite number of times the volume can be adjusted but can not remember exactly what it is, nor what models it affects....

Evening,

I‘ve experienced similar in two of the A2’s I have owned, though in my case, opening and closing the doors resulted in what you describe. In my first A2 I simply think it was the wire getting pulled to taught, there was no visible damage, but making sure there was a touch more slack seemed to do the trick. In the second case, again, no wiring issue. This time the fix required a replacement tweeter to cure it.

James has an excellent video on door card removal to get you started.

If you can’t find anything amiss with the wiring, perhaps @A2Steve (I seem to recall a sale post of his) or @Clackers (or another member) will have some spare speakers for sale. If a specialist is required, @timmus would work out cheaper than others, and he is not only a sound engineer, but our go to and trusted A2 electrical guru. He is in Lancashire though, but he does come down toward Leighton Buzzard a few times a year.

Good luck.

My speaker cutting etc problems were caused by door card connectors. So i cleaned all of them eventually.
Problem was somewhat repeatable by moving/shaking wire bundle from door to car by hand while door was open.

If the radio sound menu includes front/rear fader, then you have rear speakers!
Mac.
