Specification differences SE/Sport

Hi all, I'm new around here. Just looking into an A2 now prices are almost in reach. I have had quite a few VAG cars over the years so know a fair amount about them (Mk2 Golfs/Corrados/Polo/Ibiza 130TDI/Leon 2 TDI FR (shared with my wife currently). Would like an A2 as a second car.

I've searched for this answer but:

Obviously I'd like a TDI Sport (preferably the 90) but budget is quite tight so I was wondering what the difference is between the SE and the Sport.

I'd guess sports seats and wheels are the big differences but are there any others?

robin...

An SE with leather seats (as these are "Sport" in shape) and a lot of options is not much different to a Sport? Or have I got that wrong?

Sorry for all the words :)

Thanks for the reply John. I'd looked at 2001 and 2005. 2003 seems to be the most clear :)

Partial answer here too:

But this begs the question what's a Special Edition compared to an SE?

And I'd assumed 90TDIs were all Sport. I'm not convinced this is true anymore.

I had trouble working out Audi's range when looking for an A3 TDI S-Line for my wife too.

Edit: Found more pertinent info (posting for others who may search and find this thread):

Thanks for that ULP. I think I've got the hang of it all now (after trawling back through the forums).

Just on the hunt for something with the right spec and in budget now :)

:DI've got a tdi 90 Basic and its far from it.
It lacks the spot lights on the front,so less glass to get damaged.
Weird though as if you phone audi they tell me its a sport even though I know it isnt.
It has the 17' wheels, met paint and had a concert, climate fitted as options

Its a Nice car as most reckon you need climate fitted to enhance value so a win win for me.
I dont think but not sure of course if all sports had climate fitted standard.

Ignore the above its Dross, checked with Audi and my car is a sport, was sold as a Base tdi 90

:thumbs::D

Hi Robin,

You appear to be finding the information you need. Just a few thoughts for you to consider.

The sport version was not available for the first few years after the A2 was first sold.

The cheapest A2 models that you will find are the petrol 1.4 models without electronic climate control.

Some owners with 17" wheels have had problems with buckling, and the ride is harsher, compared to 16" and 15" wheels. There are some first class posts on here about wheel, tyre and damper choice.

Check to see when the timing belt was replaced, as this can make for an expensive service.

On an early model A2, it is likely that the dampers will be past their best by now. They were never great IMHO!

The most important thing to check is that the car has not been involved in a heavy shunt. The aluminium chassis is harder to straighten than a steel one.

John.

I dont see the benefits of the sport.
TDI 75 is more than adequate and 16's look pretty good and i'd assume ride much better...not that the ride is great anyway..SE's can have better spec too

The 1.4TDI is the sweet spot for me (I'm smitten with VAG TDIs after a 130TDI Ibiza Sport and a Leon2 FR 170TDI).

I think I know about these issues now (well, mostly). 17" 5x100 wheels are pretty easy to come by too.

Good point.

That's the first thing I'd change. Most old cars need new dampers. It's likely I'll be putting Koni FSD/Weitec 30/30 on there or maybe FK coilovers.

The most important thing to check is that the car has not been involved in a heavy shunt.

Another great point. I'm never comfortable with buying any car that's had damage but, yes, it's even more pertinent to the alu A2.

Many thanks for the input John.

I think the guaranteed DIS and sports seats (with electric lumbar) is the most appealing thing. I suspect resale value may be more too. I'm looking at both Sport and SE as I plan to sort the suspension and wheels out anyway.

I'm in no big hurry so can wait until the right spec comes up.

btw. I"m still learning so some of what I say above might be wrong :)

What makes you think it isn't - some used cars are badly described (there are a few on the audi used web site that are the Sport but not badged as such). The 17" 'Sport' wheels weren't a factory option for other models (other than Colour Concepts, I believe). Does your car have DIS2 (trip computer on RH stalk) and electric lumbar adjustment on Sports seats? If so, I bet it's a Sport. The Sport never came with front fogs, despite the dillusion some people have that fog lights are somehow sporty (on that basis, so is a grand piano!).

your quite right it is a Sport,It has all the thing syou say it should have.I went to the dealers to check today and as you can imagine now I know why it had Climate as an option.
Needless to say I'm very impressed about all this

It has the Rear discs as well,I wasnt bothered about it being a sport more excited about it having the 90 engine lol:p:D
