Sporadic Mechanical Fault - any ideas?

Hi all,

Well I attempted to fix the ABS fault on the car, hoping it was a faulty left side front speed sensor......removed the old sensor and did my best to carefully clean out the hole with brake cleaner, reasembed and moved onto all the other wheels to remove and clean the other sensors......must admit it near broke me doing it as some sod had rounded off all the 5mm Allen/hex bolts.......the rear sensor on the right was gunned up no end and was undoubtedly the reason for the intermittent electrical fault shown on my scanner!

Well anyway I finally managed to get all sensors clean (and a new one on front left) and then cleared the faults. Re-read and the scanner recorded no faults....happy days!

Well not really! Took it for a spin and 100m down the road, ABS and ASR lights show up along with the red warning and 3 beebs.......which set off my own bleeping as by now I was in sooo much pain (suffer from fibromyalgia).

So rescanned the car and got the following fault code:

00283 - 132 kwp1281
Front left ABS wheel speed sensor G47
Sporadic Mechanical Fault

Is it possible the replacement sensor is duff?
Or is it more likely I need a new hub?

I need to rest a few days to get over today, but plan to have another clean of the hole the sensor fits into.

Is it possible it is just some junk in there that is registering the mechanical fault, or would the fact it says mechanical fault that it is the hub at fault?

Thanks in advance for any assistance! I would of course much rather drop the car to a garage to fix, but being off work and not getting paid means I simply can't!!

When my car had the same symptoms, it turned out to be the front wheel bearing. The ABS ring is in the face of the bearing, and so if it moves a little way away from the sensor, it produces this fault. I fitted a new one (not a trivial task and you need the special tool), and all was fine.

Thanks Geoff,

I was dreading it being a bearing due to the cost of a garage doing this will hurt the pocket.... Right now I couldn't physically do the work myself.

It's a shame the garage won't use supplied parts, as I am sure I could buy a whole hub assembly for what they would charge for the bearing!

The bearings cost about £70 from memory. You can hire the tool from a chap on ebay - but as you say, you are not fit enough to tackle it at the moment. At least you can still drive around with the fault. I did for a couple of months while I tried everythiing else - including new sensor and wiring loom.

Hi leviticus,

You're not too far away from Milton Keynes and Hotstuff on here has the correct tools to fit a new wheel bearing if required.

He's well known on the forum and does first class work in a controlled workshop enviroment for a lot less than a dealer.
Might be worth you dropping him a PM, or he may even read this and reply direct to you.

Hope this helps.

Cheers

Jeff
