Sqeak/rattle on startup tdi90

The right hand drain for the windscreen goes into a drain tube that discharges near the polyV belt. I have always felt this pipe is too short and easily dislodged such that you could get water onto the belts. Worth a check.

Is the black plastic cowling at the bottom of the windscreen damaged?

Yes water could be getting past the spray jet unit, a bit clear mastic could fix that.

I guess you could take the bonnet off, chuck water on the windscreen and you will see where it goes.

I'll need to look in the daylight when I get time. I do think water might be getting in behind the jet just not sure if the drain is out of alignment also.

Thanks!

My drain pipe is secured to water box with a hose spring clip (not shown on the parts diagram). You would also need to secure it the firewall - cable clamps?

Are we talking about the same drain pipe? I'm talking about the drivers side (belt end of engine). The only thing I can think of as "water box" is the windscreen washer bottle which is on the passenger side. Clearly I don't understand???

Yes, concentrating on the squeak and forgot the rattle! Could the auxiliary belt slipping on the tensioner cause the tensioner to rattle???

The "water box" (Audi's description, not mine) is the plastic moulding that runs along the entire lower edge of the windscreen. The drain pipe is attached to this.

Is that what's sometimes called the scuttle? Could be a literal translation from the original German. A scuttle is usually for coal, in UK, but is basically a bucket, hence water box?
Mac.

That's what I would call it but that term is usually applied to the whole assembly under the windscreen and behind the bonnet, so perhaps the Audi term is more correct.

I think you could be onto something there. Vbelt only being a year old (and then a brand new one) wouldn't want to slip easily is my guess.

Didn't come back to finish this up. It was water but I had to replace the gutter trim / plastic trim under the windscreen in the end as I didn't realise the windscreen guys that fitted all those months ago had cracked it refitting.

So checked drain and refitted - its not been back.

Thanks for posting the (possible / probable) resolution. Looks like I might have got one right at last!!! see post #18.
