Started driving an A2

Hi, completely new to Audi and just bought one as I needed a small cheap runabout that's cheap to run and fairly strong.

Had it a week and got the timing belt/water pump changed as had not been done for 14 years!! also got an oil change.

Learnt that the electrics on these cars are crap and that a Webasto heater on a cold morning is a dramatic affair!!!

This is the newest car I've owned by 8 years

Anyway, I like to ask lots of questions - so you'll no doubt hear from me again soon!!

Cheers all

Hi Billy Smalls,
Welcome , there is nothing wrong with questions although you can find a lot by searching on google with the prefix a2oc & then your search this is more successful than the forum search engine, there are also many useful “how to” documents in that section.

Welcome to A2 ownership.

Not true! Had mine 16 years and no electrical problems what soever, in fact near zero problems in total. Just need to maintain them properly and drive considerately! But of course when buying s/h you rarely know the history.

A lot of electrical issues when the A2 gets old are due to corrosion of the earthing points. The body may be aluminium but the electrical cables are steel or copper so when you get 2 different types of metals touching you get a chemical reaction. For this reason, most if not all of the steel bolts on the A2 are coated. There are numerous earthing points but the one that comes up most often is the one behind the nearside headlight, due no doubt to its exposure. See here:

What electrical issues are you having because there is normally a relatively simple fix for most of them.

Thanks

1. passenger window is closed with passenger's switch or driver's switch - goes up, then down a bit, then up then down a bit - could be a safety feature to stop kids crushing their arms. Had battery off recently, maybe this needs re-setting?

2. hazard lights work in a fashion - off side blinkers don't flash when hazards are on - blinkers are fine otherwise. Maybe a relay problem? where is that located?

Going to seek out those earthing points

Cheers

My car has been living outside on a dusty farm - a proper work horse (and pretty sure horses have ridden in the car) it's a well used hack!

1 is either lubrication, thermal cutout or possibly a dodgy switch somewhere. Yes, you will need to reset the top and bottom points for one-shot raising / lowering.
2 is probably the relay, and it's behind the ashtray. Small hands needed! :)

Thanks. I think Mr. Trump is going to be looking for work soon, so I'll get him to put his small hands to use.....earn a pint maybe?

Yes,

1. Try a bit of furniture polish in the runners, it may be picking up a jam and going back down for safety reasons. Worst case scenerio it will be a window motor and these are cheap.

2. The relay is best accessed by removing the climate unit, I have known working flasher relays here.

Hi Billy Smalls,
I had exactly the same problem with my hazards not flashing properly, obtained a replacement unit from the marketplace & fitted last weekend if your’s is double din like mine, I found it
far simpler to remove stereo , Climate unit etc & then i un clipped the two flat clips & unscrewed the 2 screws at the back of the a/c climate unit this allows the hazard / flasher relay to be rotated upwards & then out to remove electric plug followed by sliding the old relay out prior to fitting the new one but tested before installing in dash.

The window might just need calibrating if this is happening when it reaches the top. Mine does this occasionally. Put the window all the way down, but when it reaches the bottom, don't let go of the switch, hold it there for 2-3 seconds before releasing. Do the same when you put it up.

Sometimes it might need more than one attempt but this usually stops mine opening again when I close it.

Sprayed some silicone grease into the runners as it's solved the problem

When Alison's one failed, I followed a How To Guide here.

Mine has a normal Single DIN Radio. I put my hand into the flock lined cubby hole below the Climatronic Panel, made it into a fist and gently felt the clips release.

I then pulled the cubby hole gently towards me. This then reveals the location of the Fun Size Mars Bar sized Indicator Relay. It is situated just behind the support structure for the Cubby Hole, Climatronic Panel and Radio.

You're likely to use some "Industrial Language as you work out how to remove the old unit without removing some skin from your hands...

It took me about 25 minutes in a Car Park a suitable distance from anyone who might recognise me. ? ? ?
