Starter motor

picked up the 03 reg tdi se the other day, and the chap (very nice bloke, has had 9 audis!) said it needs a starter motor as the release bearings (or something along those lines) have gone.
Im assuming this cannot be repaired so want to buy another one and fit it myself. i assume that Seat and VW would be cheaper than going to audi?
or is there somewhere better i could go?

As far as parts prices are concerned, they'll be the same at whatever dealership you visit, and actually, you'll find sourcing Audi parts is now getting harder at a VW dealership.

The part number you'll need is variable, so I can't give you a definitive one but the price is around the £270 mark or £150 if you exchange your old unit for a new one. These are dealer prices including VAT and will be cheaper than the alternatives such as VagParts, as I don't think they do an exchange program.
