Information Steve B's Project "Violet"

It doesn't have a back seat in it at the moment (donated that) and the wheels have not been refurbed and the front seats are just cloth ones ta the moment, but at least you can see it in its "Before" state.

She's beautiful 

Thanks,

when she is done she will be quite special.

Loving using it for the daily commute now that it has had the mechanics sorted.

Seats next, as soon as I can get the heater pads (Audi ones of course) they are going off to be refurbed.

They will look much better when finished, I don't like the "Looks new" look for cars of this age, so I will make sure that they look GREAT without going OTT.
I had to go for the lap centre belt because that is what it would have had when it left the factory.

Latest update.

Fitted the door trims today (the ones in the picture above.)
I stripped them down fully and gave them a good wash.

Replaced the worn switches and made sure all clips etc were in the right place.

Cleared up one one of the mysteries! The factory spec sheet listed BOSE but there was absolutely no sign of it being removed and I began to doubt that it was ever fitted. The main reason for the doubt was because there were no rear speakers and when I looked into the aperture (with the grill removed) there was definitely no sign of the loom.
When I took the first rear door card off I had a very pleasant surprise. All of the wiring WAS there but it had been very neatly wrapped securely around the rest of the remaining loom!!! RESULT.

I have a “Donor” FSI thst has rear speakers so I was able to use the speakers and tweeters from that.
I also removed the standard amplifier for the rear speakers but unfortunately there was absolutely no sign of the loom for it!! I though it might be neatly tucked away like the rear speaker looms were, but no. It definitely wasn’t there.

So that will have to wait until Tom is down south again.

I then just popped in the red leather rear bench (rather than drive around with no seat at all.
I can now see how nice the red looks against the Violet paint!! It just seems to work nicely, the colours do go together well.

I have now decided to go for genuine Audi heated pads.
I have found a company that supply a full set of pads that are designed for the mk4 Golf but they will definitely fit fine.

Dear, but half the price I have been quoted so far at around £280 for the set of 4 pads and two connecting looms (that connect the two pads together on each seat.

In this cold weather it will be well worth it, leather can be cold on frosty mornings and it left the factory with heated seats.

It seems to be running very well too, it seems really quick and it almost encourages you to have fun.

A few tanks of super unleaded certainly heloed.

Got to arrange a slit slot with my favourite trimmer to have the pads fitted and have them connolised.

Getting there!!!!!!!!

Steve,
If the car originally had BOSE as std fit then that would explain why there is no wiring loom for the rear amp (in the drivers side secret compartment)

Thanks again for the rear bench seat, had cause to have 5 people in my A2 today, so much better with the middle 3 point belt over the lap belt
My A2 looks spot on now with the matching seats
I may look out for a set of soul black door cards now to finish of the interior (doesn't look quite right with the grey door cards and black seats)

Cheers,
Paul

Hi Paul

glad you are happy with the seat!!!
I am confused though
The BOSE amp has to have a loom and there is no sign of it so I assume that was taken out when the Amp was removed?

I reckon whoever did it knew what they were doing because it has been removed very neatly.

Hopefully I can find a sensibly priced BOSE kit or I will still need Tom to put in the standard amp loom which would be a waste really.

Steve B

The genuine heated seat pads arrived today and although £280 is a lot, it is a lot less than full price!

It really had to be genuine pads for Violet.

Just waiting for a slot in my trimmers busy diary and the seats can be done.

I also made an offer on a BOSE kit and if that is accepted it will be another tick in the box.

That would just leave the fitting of the BOSE (where is Tom when you need him LOL) and then the wheel refurb.

The cost is mounting significantly and so it looks like it will be too expensive for anyone to buy, but that is not a problem, I will just keep it.

Steve B

Got the trusted Lidl £13 two settings heated seat oot as it is getting a wee bit cold in Scotia these day's, Webasco heating raengine tae 90deg sooner or later too, guid wee cars these when you ad these additions at German / Scottish prices, TUV approved too.

Progress update

bought a mint climate panel and a full BOSE kit, so I am nearly there.
The red leather seats are being refurbished and converted to standard OEM seat heaters. They say I MIGHT get them back before Christmas!! That would be a nice present to myself.

So when the climate panel panel is sorted, the BOSE fitted and the seats fitted, that will just leave a wheel refurb and that is all I have planned. No rush for the wheels though because I will probably only kerb them anyway.

Nearly there!!!!

Steve B

Fitted the soft touch panel with the heated seat buttons and started to install a false floor kit.

The climate panel was simple enough.

The false floor will need tweaking though, because "Violet" has the rear mounted six CD changer, so the right hand trim panel is different. But I will use the one I have as a template to enable me to cut out the required openings for the side rail.

Unfortunately I have only done the LH side (the easy one) because the next day I have been struck down by flu (the real thing, not "man flu") it has meant that I can hardly walk let alone work on the car. But hopefully it wont last long so I should be able to finish off the job at the weekend.

I also received the BOSE from Ed (thanks again) it is pretty much complete and I have started to fit some of the parts. It also came with what looks like a full loom, that should help (but I am no good at "Electrickery" so I will need someone to wire it all in for me. Tom is very busy but hopefully he will be down South again soon. I am amazed at how well someone has removed the BOSE from Violet, it is almost as if it was never fitted!!

One thing that has disappointed me is that someone has obviously bought "Violet" in the past just to strip the goodies off for another car. It is a pity that people do that, especially to a car with such a pedigree. It is costing me thousands to put it all back again. The leather in particular is costing me an arm and a leg! Not only have I had to buy TWO sets of leather (to get the correct combination for Sport fronts and three seat bench, but I have also had to have genuine Audi seat heater elements installed AND get the seats recoloured to ensure they match properly.

It will be great to see it back in its original spec but I sense a loss of a couple of thousand pounds if / when I sell it.

As an avid TDI fan I must admit that the free revving and responsive drive of the FSI has been a real eye opener. Revving it to 5,000 revs when joining the motorway is very addictive.

Steve, I'm in the process of changing the whole interior to cream so I have a 6 disc CD changer false floor panel available. I was going to sell it as a whole kit but don't mind splitting it for you.

Hi Steve, thank you, I suppose I could send you my non CD changer (false floor) panel? That way you would have a full kit again (I would imagine the demand for false floor kits without the CD changer is better anyway???)

What do you think?
I wouldn't want to leave you with a part kit.

Steve B

Steve, get well soon. I’m no electrical wiz but do have some knowledge of audio. I also have a multi meter and decent ratchet crimpers if you need?

It's ok Steve. I meant a complete CD changer kit, I'm going to be keeping a black false floor and boot carpet to hide any dirt. I can't really be bothered to remove the full length of cabling for the CD changer at the moment anyway, so both boot panel is available if you want it. Ps I hope you feel better soon.

I felt the same about Violet as well. Such a lovely species rare car and then someone goes and strips it of its parts for a few quid extra. So glad it's come yo you Steve, I don't think it could have gone to a better person.

Thanks Steve,

Can I pay for a quick delivery please too. I realise it won't go until Wednesday even if you have the time to send it, so whenever you get chance, thank you.

Hi,

Thank you for that kind offer, but I have no idea of how complicated it will be.

I was hoping that since it had BOSE originally it would not be too big a job, but I don't know what has been removed, for example there is no connector in the battery compartment for the sub and no sign of the connector for the amplifier.

Steve B

Sorry to here that Ed didn't get round to fitting that bose system. It came from a car I had to break a few months back. If I were you when you take the side trim out the boot to cut it for false floor it's an ideal time to get the loom in for the sub. Hopefully the only 'electrickery' bits needed will be a bit of messing with the radio end plug to merge it with whatever already exists in your car.
Best of luck.
