STICK OR TWIST- Time to make a difficult decision on my TDI 90

Sadly the turbo seems to have gone on my Dolphin Grey TDI90. It's at the garage now and I have the decision to commission the quoted £1,500 repair or to sell the car on as is to someone good with the spanners...which sadly I am not. https://www.a2oc.net/community/index.php?threads/help-suspect-turbo-issue.44789/.

To be honest as much as I love the A2s (had three to date) I have been pondering a change as would like to own other makes of car (Alpha, BMW etc) before I pop my clogs and the BMW Z4 looks appealing.

Turbo aside the car is fantastic. Great body work. Alloys recently fitted are top of the range in the brochure at launch and have been fully conditioned to new release in the summer. New undertray. Premium tyres all-round with 6mm of tread. Had a new DM flywheel, belts and water pump fitted 10k miles ago. It has done 110K miles. Full service history. Has boot shelf fitted. Under handbrake tray etc. It has the incredibly rare combo of a black and cream twist interior, with lovely full leather seats and all the wiring and controls on place for heated seats. Switches are all hard touch. Has OSS currently not working. Was working until recently....decided to relubricate the OSS system and sadly one side moved more forward than the other under operation and became jammed. Loosened the roof motor to close the roof glass but have not been back to to sort roof out since. Has cruise control from factory, winter pack etc. Timmus has worked his magic on the car with a retune and fitting Bluetooth into the car.

What would you do if you were in my position? Do you see the repair cost being offset by the increase in value of having the job done?

Your advice (as ever,) would be gratefully received.

Thanks Paul

I think the £1500 quoted may be on the steep side Paul....perhaps for a brand new turbo. I've seen reconditioned turbos for around £250 and the labour charges for fitting will be nowhere near that full amount. I would give WOM a ring and ask them for advice and a quote first off. ?

Hi Paul ,
Was that a local garage?
Thanks
Keith.

I think a lot depends on exactly what has happened. If it is the bearings that have worn, then perhaps a refurbished turbo would be all that is required. However if the blades have hit the shrouds and bits have broken off and were ingested by the engine, that is a far different scenario. Without the full facts it is difficult to say which is the more sensible long term answer. Ultimately it is your car, your money and your path to choose. You have posted this question due to being torn in two directions at once. £1500 does sound a little expensive, but parts costs alone have increased recently. This takes me back to my first sentence.....I think a lot depends on what has happened.

Anything mechanical can have the best servicing and much money spent on it and still have issues.

Either way good luck.

Always difficult to sell a car with known faults; you reduce the number of potential buyers massively. The problem with getting it fixed it’s that you’re looking at unknown costs - although £1500 sounds very toppy.

These cars still don’t have a lot of value, sadly if you need to sell it you’re looking at parts value.

Tdi90 with only 110k on the clock & all the extras to include your cruise control DMF done OSS etc etc, I would be inclined to spend the money & keep the car.
They are going up in value, particularly ones with all the options, perhaps search for a cheaper recon turbo,

I’d certainly be very sorry to see you go Paul if you did hang up your hat.

I’d be interested in the car if you do decide to sell it as is, the Labour rates here would make it a viable repair.

You are not far from us, we have a specialist down the road in Hounslow called Gary who is well known on the forum. I would be talking with Gary and if you decide to go for the repair we can sort your roof at the same time and you’ll have a lovely low mileage A2

Again - in the same vein as the https://a2oc.net/community/index.ph...r-sale-mot-failure-so-spares-or-repair.48240/ thread yesterday, this club is pretty amazing for internal offers of assistance to keep members in the fold. Lovely warm glow on an otherwise rather bleak and blustery evening up here in Scotland.

I have same car with 150k just had turbo removed, reconditioned and refitted with oil feed pipe oil and filter change (required for warranty) cost me around £900 in Bristol area by audi specialist. Only they fitted the vacuum feed pipe from the tandem pump to the blank on the manifold, forgot to tighten the boost hose clip and then handed me the keys.... So I would phone WOM and let a special specialist quote you.
The atl turbo is about £1300 alone from Europe new I found. Best of luck with your choice.

Good advice. Thanks. Nor really drivable to WOM but could get it up there some how.

Just had the same dilemma with my 5seat 90 bluey!
173k miles. Abs sensor 1x rear shock, n/s wishbone and 2tyres required for MOT. Nearly scrapped as it's going into limp mode on long hills and I'm also topping up power steering fluid once a month. +Its had a weaping turbo for the 110k miles and 8 yrs iv owned it. Its only my work hack, but I bit the bullet and coughed up 600££ recon it will be blueys final year though as cambelt due. I'll be happy if it's driving to the scrappy this time next yr.! They are just getting old now and Cornish weather doesn't help!!

If you decided to sell, I am looking for an A2 TDI. A 90 would be OK for me, and it seems a great spec. If this is what you decide, then I'm sure we could come to a suitable price for you. Its too good to part out, and I hope you decide whats best for you. Thanks, and good luck, Andy

To retain your car or sell your car?
I think.....

You will always measure other cars short falls with your A2.

Invest in it.
You won't regret it, plus you would miss it when it's gone.

From my post above, I will offer it to someone on here before scrapping the limp mode is it needing a good run as doesn't see even a duel carriageway nevermind a motorway. It's had, n/s wishbone new this yr, disks all round last yr, alternator (125A)year before. Comes with a good set of pepperpot alloys as well. MOT man said it will need other wishbone soon, and cambelt is 73k old and PAS rack is obviously leaking. Scrap man offered £150, I'd rather it went to someone on here to resurrect or for parts though even if it's for free. I'll post sept,Oct 22.
