Stop Start Battery Advice

Yes should fool it
Just watch out for the smart charges tripping out as it I’ll take a lot of current at first and some chargers trip out on either heat or excessive current
When it trips back in you are back to square one again
Only reason I mention it is I have done the same trick one of my chargers managed it ok but it’s a monster of a chargers the other diy type charger tripped out every 2 mins until the battery was about 30% charged and each time it recovered it would not start charging as it thought the battery was too flat

It was a right faf

Would just wiring the old and new battery together for a time not equalise the charge giving it enough to be charged by the smart charger?

Yes as long as they don’t trip out due to a 5amp charger trying to provide 30 amps
My small smart charger is rated at 5amps and after about two mins on a really flat battery (which it is only charging because I fooled it into it) it will trip out. After about 30 seconds it kicks in again but then needs to be fooled again
Unfortunately the old school charger also trips out so if both trip out at the same time charging stops and does not restart until you fool them again

You mean just connect the charged battery to discharged battery and leave it a while... I'm not sure if there would be any issue with current draw - but essentially this is what you do if you use jump leads to a flat battery. I used to carry round a charged battery in the boot of an old passat that I used to get the car started if I mistakenly left the lights on etc until I got a new battery. To start I connected the charged battery to the car battery via jump leads and I had no ill-effects (however I only had it connected to start the car then disconnected again - I never left it connected for a long period of time).

Took Battery off the Fiesta down in Lancashire yesterday. Brought it back here and put Smart Charger on it in Parallel with a good Battery off my 1972 VW 1600 Type 3 Variant. That does fool the Smart Charger to start working. Not sure if it is getting anywhere . . . . . . yet. Early days yet but thinking I’ll end up buying a New Battery. I’ve tried 3 different Suppliers to get a Price. For some reason they are all having great difficulty identifying the correct Battery ! For a 2016 Ford Fiesta 1.0 Petrol Ecoboost ! Battery says it is VARTA But there’s no VARTA Short Number on it. Ford Part Number : 1 917 575 Comes up on eBay search but in Germany !

Think I’ve found it now VARTA D54. Thank you. Cheapest on eBay £104 50 but local Auto Parts Cumbria in Kendal quoted £92.80 plus VAT. Still trying to Charge the Original one for now.

It’s only the Estate version that is the Variant. People generally refer to all versions of the VW Type 3 as Variant but that is incorrect. Mine is Marina Blue 1600A Variant Automatic. That A makes it a base model, Twin Carburettors. 1600 TL would be a Twin Carb Deluxe. 1600 E Fuel Injection. They were available in 2 Door Saloon, rare in the UK, I think. 2 Door Fastback and Variant ( Estate ). Had ours since 1988. Had “ Body Off “ Restoration about 5 years ago. I’m one of the oldest Members of the VW Type 3 & 4 Owners Club. I’ve had a LHD 411LE Auto Variant, 412LE 4 Door Saloon, Type 3 Fastback. Also have a 1966 Beetle bought in 1986 or 1987. Also “ Body Off “ Restoration In 2018 to be our Daughters Wedding Car that year. Wish you hadn’t asked now, don’t you ?

Not in the slightest. Wasn't aware the variant was estate only. I was under the impression it was a squareback, or was that the adopted title?

“ Squareback “ was the USA nickname for the Variant. They called the 2 Door Saloon a “ Sedan “. Fastback stayed the same.

I think you will find that VW still use Variant to denote their Estate Cars e.g. Passat.

Volvo also use S for Saloon & V for their Estate Variants e.g. S70, V70. Not into Volvos but don’t they use C for Cabriolets or Coupes ?

The badge on the Tailgate of my Type 3 Variant says “ VW Variant Automatic “. You will not find Variant on the back of a Saloon or Fastback.

Going back to basics, in the case the original Volkswagen “ Beetle “ that again was only a nickname that came about because of the shape of the Car.

Our 1966 “ Beetle “ model designation is VW Type 1, or VW 1300 DeLuxe. The USA nickname was “ Bug “. In Germany “ Kafer “ or is it “ Kaffer “ whatever the German is for “ Beetle “ ?

The “ Beetle “ did make a nice Wedding Car though ! Our Daughter had known the VW all her life as she is only a 1990 and we had the car before that.

Yes to both, including when when they're the same thing (MkII C70 folding hardtop coupe). It's what I drive when I'm not in an A2 :D

In Germany “ Kafer “ or is it “ Kaffer “ whatever the German is for “ Beetle “ ?
Kafer is closer, but add an umlaut over the a, like so ... Käfer. This represents an extra e after the letter, so in a language without umlauts, really it should be Kaefer.

My grandparents had a Variant - from memory a beige Type 3 - in LHD, specifically for towing a caravan on holidays around Europe. Not long before Grandad died it was replaced by an RHD Renault 16TL bought new. This later became our family wagon because it was too large for Grandma on her own. Ah, those were the days :D

Thread swerve over! ;)
