Strange noise (from starter motor?) when starting engine

Hi there.

I'm new to the web site, and new to Audi A2 ownership after picking up our 2001 A2 SE (1.4 petrol) last weekend.

When I start the engine, some times there is a funny noise which I think maybe coming from the starter motor. It almost sounds the same as if you have ever tried to start the engine on car when the engine is already running and you just didn't realise it. Its like the starter motor is perhaps slipping or something. It doesn't do this every time, but more often than not, probably about 60% of the times the engine starts, and it seems to make no difference if the engine is hot or cold.

I'm not sure if anybody could offer some advice? I'm pretty certain it needs to go to a Garage so whilst on the subject does anybody know of a good Audi specilist in the Manchester area (I'm 10 miles north of Manchester) that arn't likely to be as expensive as the Audo main dealer?

I know nothing about cars but that same noise happened
to me on my 1.4 SE petrol and the garage just put a new
starter motor in under warranty.

I'm also looking for a garage as my dealer (not audi) is a
making a right mess of my car. I live in leeds but commute to
manchester to work.

Great, thanks for the quick reply Darren,again I don't know much about the mechanicals of cars but it doesn't suprise me that a new starter motor may be required.

Will try and track a local specialist, will let you know if I find one in the area, to be honest I'm prepared to go as far as Leeds to get it sorted anyway (rather do that than take to main dealer)

Hi Paul,
I have used a garage called Autodeutsch in the past, which is an independant Audi specialist in Manchester.(Dont be put off by the grotty looking garage and the area)

The other garage which i would highly recommend is Awesome GTI in Irlam.
They have done a lot of work to my A2 including remap, suspension,cam belt etc and they specialise in Audi + VW .

Both charge £45/hour labour +vat.
Of the two, Awesome has the state of the art garage plus the benefit of a
courtersy car if booked in with service or a nice waiting area if you want to hang around.
