Supermarket diesel?????????

Just a question for you all.

Where do you chaps fill up? Never had a diesel before and was just wondering if there was any difference in performance and MPG if you filled up at a Shell garage rather than a supermarket? Is it worth paying that few pence more per litre of diesel?

Cheers Andrew

It most definately is, stick to premium brands, the savings with supermarket jungle juice are not worth the long term costs. I try to use Shell with BP, Esso as reserve.

My local shell is actually cheaper than my local supermarkets (they increase their base price to account for 5p off vouchers & the like).

The difference between brands of diesel is not the basic fuel (which they make at the same refineries regardless of brand, hence is identical), but the additive package (antifoaming agents, detergents, preservatives, and so forth).

In 20 years of motoring the only fuel issue I've had is when I put petrol in my diesel engined car - I can't blame the supermarket for that :)

Ive done 50k miles on almost entirely Sainsbury's diesel. Engine is a clean as a whistle and my pocket is happier.

Thanks for the replies guys. Been filling up at Tesco so may give the Shell garage a visit from now on to see if i notice any difference.

If you have an Amex card and use foursquare, check in at the shell garage your going to use and spend over £50 on diesel,if you do it correctly you will get a £15 rebate on your amex card.

I do use supermarket fuel but get better miles per gallon and less smoke from Branded fuel applies more with the polo Bm I have because of the DPF,less smoke, more poke.

What promotion is this? is it only for Diesel? I have two cars, one is strict Shell V-power diet and the A2 is best effort v-power. And wouldn't mind some rebate on my amex!

i only use shell diesel and as i only do 100 miles a week my little A2 gets v-power diesel at every fill up ;)

I use Tesco all the time. Momentum 99 for the petrol car and standard diesel for our diesels. Never had any issue with their diesel.

Have always used V Power Diesel from Shell to fill up with my TDi. In terms of performance and zip, would defintelty recommend this fuel. However recently started to use BP Ultimate Diesel and noticed a quieter engine and slightly better fuel economy. I recently googled this and I recall reading that V Power has more detonation. Combined with my heavy right foot this may lead to less MPG. Of course other factors are always at play, particularly ambient temperature which has increased over the last few weeks. Always difficult to draw conclusions, me thinks but certainly no black smoke from my Tdi when accelerating when using shell or BP.

Humps don't forget you must have 4square then check in at shell site,Fraid its one time offer only!

Done, thanks a lot for the tip! The A2 (small tank) won't take £50 of v-power so had to take both cars to the local shell. But £15 saved thanks to you :D (and amex)

My dad has an late Audi A4 Cabriolet 3.0 tdi , always uses either Morrisons or Asda (price and mum likes the vouchers) and has had no probs with the car at all. He goes abroad in it down to the med quite a few times and runs sweet as a nut. Hoping to buy it when he sells as lovely car to drive with all the toys
