Suspect Comfort Unit Failure

Hi all,

I believe I also have a comfort unit failure developing.

I have a few intermittent symptoms and they seem to occur all together:-
1. As the ignition key is turned the central locking appears to be activated? lock+unlock? or double unlock? it happens very quickly and as there is no door lock plungers to indicate the locks position its difficult to say what is happening.
2. Lights On Alarm, intermittent or no alarm at all.
3. Petrol flap will not open remotely.

As I mentioned before this is an intermittent fault, and any one of these can be the first indication that there is anything wrong. But when one fault appears the others are there keeping it company.

I have done a scan of the car using VCDS resulting in the fault codes which will not clear,

I’ve had post from Humps suggesting getting battery tested, which I will be doing. But it’s also got me thinking about another battery on the car. The alarm battery that’s located near where the CD changer would be. That one that’s really difficult to get too.

When I first got the car 2 years ago, it used to sound the occasional 4 bleeps from the back of the car. I spoke to the dealer and they informed me it was the Alarm Battery Level Alert. NOW, I thought that the reason could have been because the car had been standing for a while on a garage forecourt. The more I used the car the less it bleeped.

Is it possible there could be any links? I somehow doubt it but I thought I would mention it!!!

check the earth point. Make sure the nut is tight.

Then: the "türsteuergerät" is the black box inside the door. You may have a dodgy connection somewhere towards your doors, which would also explain the "lock unlock".

Thanks Bret,

You've given me somethings else to think about. I'll get searching this weekend time permitting.

Working round the jobs she has planned for me;)

The door unlock lock noise can be caused by the door catch failing. This happened on mine and was accompained by a fault code "door won't de-safe"

01562 - Right Rear Door 59-10 - Can't Unlock - Intermittent
01562 - Right Rear Door 61-00 - Won't De-Safe.

These codes reappeared every time you locked and unlocked the car. Once the catch was changed they disappeared, and so has the lock, unlock noise on puttig the keys in.

The VW specialist who replaced the catch said they the often fail on VAG cars and further down the line can cause problems with the alarm setting / going off. Since the car will intermitantly detect the door open and then closed. Does your car know which doors are open? I got my catch done when you could open the door and it didn't signal on the dash display!

Hi all

I believe that I have the same problem: When starting the doors lock/unlock. The door behind mine opens sometimes but not all the time. And yes it is intermittently displayed on the dash when the door is open.

How much is the catch and is it an easy job?

Regards

Neil

Hi,

The catch was £65 with 1hrs labour (~£50 where I go!). The job involves taking the door card off and bits of the inner door mechanism / skin, a lot of screws apparently. Not something I was confident in doing. Since then perfect operation! and the little tinker knows which doors are open!!!

Cheers,

David

I don't believe it!!! I think I've fixed it:D

Yesterday I stripped the drivers door down to check all the wiring and connectors and earthing point at the bottom of the A pillar, but could not find anything wrong. So I just put it all back together again. I was a little surprised when I put the key in the ignition there was no lock/unlock noise and I got an indication of the door being open on the clocks digital panel. This didn't last long though, it was back to its old tricks the next time I used the car.

Today I had another go at fixing the fault. There had always been a small possibility I had contributed to the fault going away yesterday, if only for a moment. This time I checked the continuity of the wires going to the door lock, I also put a little copper grease on every single one of the connectors. Well maybe its over kill but I just didn't want to strip the door down again.

Well I think I've fixed it. :p
I have been out to the car half a dozen times this evening to check if its still working. Result so far 100% success. No lock/unlock, Light buzzer works, petrol flap works and the door being open alert is displayed on the dash display panel.

Lets hope it stays that way, and best of luck to anyone else with similar faults. Just wanted to share my findings.

Thanks Sarge.

Its still working :D:D:D

I would just like to stress to anyone reading how I fixed this fault, the amount of copper grease I used to assist the connection of the pins in the sockets was very very small. After application to the the socket, I then wiped the top of the socket to ensure there was no chance of shorting or cross connection between the pins.

Clearly my problem was a connection/signal problem somewhere between the micro switch indicating the door was in fact open, and the comfort unit.

Hi Malcolm

I'm hopefully going to have a go at this over the weekend. Was the door fairly easy to strip down? Mine is the rear right. Was the connector near the lock or on a cable away from it? I want to try and get this sorted without paying someone to do it for me!

Thanks

Neil

thanks for this topic, exact what is happening with mine, lock/unlock on ignition and again when engine just started... door card strip job then..

Does this door show on dash when it's open/closed and is it locking OK? Both mine are not showing rear right when open
not checked door open/close indication, just scanned last night and cleared codes to see what is freshly logged tonight, will do dash indication test too.

So doors mentioned with error log rear right are not giving open feedback to dash, that must be reason for clicking
