Suspect CV joint

Having a little problem with the little motor, all seem to be coming from the front left hand side wheel well area, symptoms are:
Slight knocking
Sounds and feels like a twin tub (showing my age) when under heavy acceleration, it’s fine under gentle acceleration.

From what I am looking up it sounds like the inner CV joint is suspect

I was going to change it this weekend but now having second thoughts + I have to go and buy a 36mm socket as my biggest is 32 :(

Any advice from anybody else?

Get a big hammer - the axles are loctited inside the hub and can be a pain to remove!

I found it easier to take the whole hub/drive shaft assembly to someone with a f-off very large press and have them push the drive spigot of the drive shaft out of the wheel bearing. I worried about belting the drive shaft spigot too hard and knackering the wheel bearing. All the load from the hammer blows is going through the ball bearings until such time as the Loctite gives way. Once that was done, getting the CV joint off the rest of the shaft was a doddle, just what it said in the manual. A swift blow with a hard hammer and Bob's your uncle. Very satisfying.

That’s a recommendation I’ve seen from others - take the whole lump to a garage with a press and get them to push it out for you. Should be quick and cheap and save layers of knuckle skin and £££ in the swear jar.

OP's feeling is that it's the inner CV though? Taking the whole driveshaft (complete with hub) off would keep things simple, but there shouldn't be any need to press the outer CV out of the wheel bearing to do the inner joint. J&R inner joints are available on ebay for <£20, so not a biggie in financial terms.

As for diagnosis, with the front end jacked up I'd have thought it would be possible to feel any free play in the inner joint by holding the tulip housing while rocking the brake disc back-and-forth?

Great stuff, didn’t think of just leaving it on the vehicle and working around from that as most of the guides say remove from vehicle... I’m going to give it a go tomorrow if I feel OK as I've been feeling pants for the last couple of days. Picked up a CV joint earlier today when out and about for the grand total of £22 so it’ll get changed sometime soon.

Oops. Sorry. I was thinking knuckle and hub. Totally missed inner.
