Suspension creak

Yesterday after i left from work, while going over the local speed bumps, i noticed e disturbing creak just as i hit the top part of the bump. It sounded like a metal squeal. This was apparent a few minutes later going over a pot hole, and also today.
The sound is present even if i hit the bumps at 10 km/h.
I currently have the standard suspension setup, no Koni's or any mods.
Any ideas what the problem could be?

The chances are that it's the top bearings or possibly the drop links. If it's the former, then the part is about a tenner, but labour is huge, as it involves removing the entire suspension strut and disassembling it.

If it's the drop links, you should really replace them as a pair and they're around £30 each, but labour is less of a drain (unless bolts are siezed like mine were, involving lots of angle grinder work!).

Cheers,

Mike

Hmm, now that you mention it, my mechanic told me that the right hand arb connecting-rod was causing the strange bump sounds on uneven roads, but this is more like a sharp sound rather than a bump.
How can i assess the bearing? How about the coil seats?

The bearing (I take it you mean the strut top bearing?) is accessed by totally removing the relevant suspension leg and then you need to dismantle it, meaning you'll need a decent spring compressor to do the job safely.

Mike

By assess i meant if it's possible to do a visual inspection, or only by taking it off the car can i see if it's defective?

There's no way to visually tell if the top strut bearing is faulty, you will have todo a little dismantling to check it and this is basically to remove the wheel, disc, caliper and then finally the steering knuckle and then turn the damper by hand to feel for any notchiness.

If you are going to do this though, you may as well change them both, as you're more than halfway there!

Cheers,

Mike
