Swapping Service Flap on bonnet

Hi All, maybe an obvious one but I would like to find out how easy it would be to swap the service flap on the front of my 2004 A2?

The Reason...
I parked at work this morning and started walking away from my metallic black A2 and suddenly noticed how dated the 'face-lifted' louvre-style grill flap is and actually I think a swap to the first iteration of block shiny black with the four circles on would be both more aesthetically pleasing along with giving it a more modern feel (more in keeping with the modern VW feel).

Thoughts?

Yes it can be done but you need the chrome enclosure along with the relevant design flap as they are slightly different in shape. I prefer the flat flap rather than the facelift. cheers mike

I agree the original looks better. It's a quick job to change. If I recall correctly you need longer bolts and they go in the opposite direction.

Thank you everyone for your support so far-to confirm, I want to go new to old. I’ve been looking at eBay and they appear to be about £30 delivered and come with the chrome surround. If anyone in the Bristol area has one spare then it would be good to see how it would go together. Worried about tearing into the bonnet and breaking something!

They are a doddle to change, one of the easiest mods you can do...no fear of tearing anything! Once you've got the flat one you will see how easy it is it change them over.

You can come and see my conversion. I'm in Trowbridge - 45 - 60 mins away. PM me if interested.

Hi, I'm a relatively new club member from Lancashire. I have just bought our 2nd. A2,
although my wife, (who's away for a week)
doesn't yet know about it , a stealth purchase I call it. It's also metallic black, like yours?

I posted an enquiry late last night for a 'slatted' later grille, within an hour I was kindly directed by "sootywg" to one for sale by "proghound" but unfortunately, it has been sold already. It seems I also tripped up on a point of forum etiquette, but it's all a learning process eh? Anyhoo, sootywg had replied to my thank you msg, suggesting I could perhaps swap with someone (you) who wanted the opposite to me, ie. New or late style for earlier style smooth flap.
I'm not sure exactly how we could go about this but it seems eminently sensible.
What do you think? I would remove the complete assembly with chrome surround and send it very well packed via some courier or RM parcels.
There's a guide to removing it on here somewhere and I don't think it's too difficult but I don't know your circumstances or level of skill or willingness to take stuff apart. I suppose whilst they're in transit, our respective cars are going to look a bit odd with a gaping hole. Please have a think and meanwhile, I'll look to see how difficult it may be.There's absolutely no rush or expectations, it was suggested kindly by sootywg. You can contact me on here or text 07854 129800. Cheers. Tom.
