Synthetic or semi synthetic?

Going to get my servicing done tomorrow! Just wondering which oil should I go for?

SYNTHETIC OR SEMI SYNTHETIC? The garage has asked me which one, and its £10 more for SYNTHETIC.

Any ideas, how this is beneficial for winter conditions or any other reason?

Thanks
Dev

Sorry to be blunt, but any garage that asks a question like this, shouldn't be trusted with the servicing of your A2!

In addition to the oil being synthetic only, it must comply with VW specification 507.01 to ensure full engine protection.

Cheers

The oil needs to meet: VW specification 507.01

The only oil that does this is certain brands of fully synthetic (ie not just any old fully synthetic).

You must make sure the garage use this oil, as they likely will try and fob you off with cheaper as the proper stuff is £30-45 for 4 litres.

Sorry to nitpick but the latest oil spec for A2 petrol and diesel engines is 504.00 and 507.00 respectively

I agree with all the above comments and particularly Skipton's view about your garage's abilities. There are so many different oil specs used by different car manufacturers that correct oil selection is the most fundamental requirement for a competent workshop.

Quantum Oil

Just got in contact with the garage and they use Quantum Oil, they say its used by VW, Audi, Skoda and Seat Main Dealers!

Its also an approved VW 507 oil, but apparently Quantum is a UK Volkswagen invention, (apparently blended by Castrol but not the same formula as their own VW507 longlife oil).

Any views on this oil?

Quantum is a brand name - and they're right, if you go to a dealers, this is what you'll be supplied with.

However, the niggle still remains that they asked you if you wanted mineral oil intne first place - this is not a question that should be asked really and it casts doubt over the rest of what they do.

Cheers

just put mobil 0w40 fully synthetic in my 1.4 petrol, its on offer at halford at the minute for £39 for 5l. dont know if it meets 507 but it definately meets 502 as it states it does on the back of the bottle.

Ur scaring me now skipton :(

It is a VAG specialist and have been recommended to go there by a few people on this forum and off this forum.

They seem like the best specialist near me, i'll link the address and let me know what you think?

Hi Dev

Their web site looks good so combined with recommendations from other Audi owners and the fact that they stock Quantum synthetic oil, they should be ok.
If you first spoke to a (non technical) receptionist about servicing prices then maybe they automatically ask about full or semi synthetic oil which would be valid for many older model VAG cars. It certainly gave us the wrong first impression

by the Owner's Manual

in the Owner's Manual for the 55kW and 81 kW petrol engines:
- Long Life Service:
High-Lubricity multigrade oil VW 50300
- Fixed maintenance interval
High-Lubricity multigrade oil VW 500 00 or vW 502 00; multigrade oil VW 501 01

There is a 2005 service bulletin which specifies VW 504 00 or 503 00 for LL services and VW 504 00, 501 00 or 502 00 for fixed services.

VW 504 00 is the latest spec for A2 petrol engines and seems to be superceding everything else.

Synthetic or semi synthetic

Hi Folks,
Can anyone tell me the shelf life of an un-opened container of genuine Toyota semi-synthetic engine oil? Ive had a 5-litre can in my shed for about 3-4 years. Would it still be ok to use?

Thanks

In a sealed container it should last at least 5 years as oxidation will be minimal.
So, yes you could use it - but not in your A2 as I'm sure it won't meet any of the required oil specs.

Why people are skimming on oil is beyond me...
Oil is the most important thing your car needs, and cutting corners almost every time leads to expensive engine failures. This is even more apparent on our small engines that take a lot of time to get up to temperature and need every little bit of oil compliance during this time.
Go get a Castrol or Mobil1 oil with the right specs for your engine type.

Trex - I agree 100%.

Skimping on oil is the worst form of false economy. Fully synthetic is, as far as I'm concerned, essential for anyone who wants the engine of their A2 to last as long as possible.
