Has anybody managed to remove the tailgate glass before, I am trying to save/remove it before getting rid of the tailgate.

Thanks

Have removed one and got rid of tailgate. Used glass removal wire mostly for that, damaged tailgate itself to some extent while doing that. At start tried to use plain wire, knife etc, but after buying special wire, it started to progress much faster.
Some wires on the way etc. Not nice or professional removal, but managed it without damaging glass itself, so all is fine...
Couple pics for reference.

Thats great Thank you, I will follow your advice, cheers

Bought a Bigblock (1,6 petrol) that had failed MOT on broken front spring and corroded rear brake pipe. Got that fixed and decided to replace the struts on the tailgate as well as it did'nt stay up by it self. Simple job, but managed to break the rear window glass in the process. The glass is no longer available, but luckily I found a secondhand tailgate with glass intact at a breakers yard on the other side of the country. Tailgate was cheap, the transport was not, but now it is finally safe and sound in my garage. My car is equipped with glass sunroof, but I am not sure if the tailgate that I bought comes from a car with sunroof or not. Is the tailgate different on cars with solid roof or are they interchangeable?

I'd say push something through for wire to pass the glue, cut suitable piece from wire and attach something to both ends for some grip.
I had the stick and hammer handle for that purpose if i remember correctly (that are visible in pic with the wire roll). And ofc try to stay away from glass itself. Was my first try, so not the best job or much advice i could give. Probably will find plenty videos for that tho...

And disconnect wires from glass etc too before that...

There should't be any differences on glass/tailgate. If i remember correctly, rear glass was available at audi tradition, but it was 600€+ or so, pretty expensive compared to secondhand ones.
