TDI 90 cam position sensor and fuel temp sensor

Daughters TDI 90 is showing EML light. She's had the fault code read and has been told it needs a new cam position sensor and a full temp sensor. Does anyone know how easy it is to replace these on a TDI 90? Does replacing the cam position sensor involve removing the timing belt?

Many thanks, Robert

Obvious question - apart from the engine light being on, are there any other symptoms? Have you tried clearing the codes or is this being done at arms' length?

"fuel" temp sensor (?) - is plugged into a pipe just in front of the diesel pump on the right hand end of the engine and should be reasonably simple to unplug, unscrew and replace (assuming you have to be a bit careful not to lose a few drips of fuel in the process).

Camshaft - assuming this is the Hall sensor (G40) and that the ATL is similar to the AMF. It looks like it is on the belts end of the engine, certainly the cover would have to be taken off, and possibly the belt would be in the way.

@damadgeruk replaced his not long ago and says it was a 25 minute job, so fingers crossed yours is as simple.

This is being done at arms length. Car runs OK but it will fail MOT due in January.
What makes you think the car will fail its Mot? @Robin_Cox notes Mot rules regarding EML (MIL) here...
Cam sensor is fiddly though not difficult and requires minimal disassembly, cambelt stays fitted. Temperature sender also easy IMO, requiring minimal disassembly.

Many thanks for the info - TDI 90 first registered in 2004, so exempt. However, to be on the safe side, I'll email her the link.

Normal function of the cam position sensor is to tell the ECU which cylinder is on the firing stroke and approaching TDC. Failure usually results in longer cranking at start up while the crank sensor takes over and works out the firing order.
Not 100% sure but apart from the longer cranking time, am surprised this failure would result in a warning light.

Cheers Spike
