TDi Battery recommendation

Oldskool and James, I'd refer you to the many recommendations for Varta batteries on not just this thread, but sprinkled all over the site. No need to spend £115 at ECP on a lower capacity battery from a manufacturer with a lesser reputation than Varta.

Sound advice, ill go for the Varta then, I am often guilty searching for a bargain only to end up with something of poor quality , my wife calls me Mr Cheap Charlie :)

Remember the old saying, "Buy cheap, buy twice" Very true in this instance. Remember, the Audi OE battery is a Varta for the A2 and some of these have lasted 10 years or more.

Just ordered a Varta F18, 110 Silver from Tanya-batteries on ebay, with 20% off.... £78.36 delivered! Bargain.

I was looking at the same last night but couldn't decide between this F18 (175mm high) and the F19 (190mm high, which is the same size as the original Varta TDI battery I believe) but it would appear you bought the last one as they are now saying 'out of stock' on the F18 so I will probably go for the F19 unless anyone knows a reason not to as it's only a couple of £'s more with the 20% discount?

I'm sure both are seriously over kill as they are much higher spec than the original factory fit black Varta's (80ah, 640 cold cranking amps from memory) which are brilliant by the way as I and others have had these last for 10-15 years which is quite unbelievable really and hence why I wouldn't fit anything but a Varta again.

There is an Exide battery from the same seller which can be bought for £55 odd delivered and I'm sure would be fine but I bought an Exide once before for a different car and was never that pleased and it only lasted 3 or 4 years.

For £80 all in for probably the best battery you can buy, it can't be a bad investment ?

F18 now showing back in stock!

Which to choose?

There's nothing really wrong with the one that's on the car tbh other than it's a cheaper brand and smaller than the original, but it's the only non standard item on the car and so niggles me ?

Just seems too good an opportunity to miss for peace of mind for the next 10+ years?

I'd go for the F19 over the F18 unless you have the OEM spare wheel kit, which requires the slightly shorter battery.

Yes I do have one of the original collapsible spare wheel kits but I believe it still works fine with the taller F19 190mm high battery as it's the same physical size as the original (315L x 175W x 190H) ?

From memory, it was @Proghound who suggested the spare wheel kit required a 175mm tall battery. Not having one, I can't speak from personal experience.

I suppose it would obviously give more clearance but I'm sure I've had one on a car previously but worth checking to be absolutely sure ?

My old OEM one would stop cranking over after parked for 2+ days after 18 years of service...

It’s to stop the rear end being twitchy on ice (possibly).
I remember my Dad (a builder) used to put a bag of cement in my Mum’s car in the winter. :D

Just fitted a yuasa battery but would like to know if it is necessary to take the small plug out and reconnect the breather pipe

Yes. The plug is to allow hydrogen outgassing and the pipe is so you never (although incredibly unlikely it would be to happen) end up gassing enough hydrogen inside the car to make it explode.

So, if we had a boot FULL of batteries and piped the hydrogen to a suitable engine could that be the answer to all our prayers. ?

Hi there all,

what is the opinion about that Varta F21 MGM Stop-Start battery?

From what I have read on the internet it should be better in that meaning that it is designed to
have more those charge-discharge cycles, which actually wear a normal battery down.

It is more expensive than F19, but the price apart, is it really better than the F19 because
it wears less?

Thanks!!!
