Tdi Oil filter socket size

Hello all

My 2001 Tdi is due an oil & filter change & I want to do it myself, therefore, I need to know what size socket to buy to remove the oil filter housing.

I have read somewhere in here that it is 32mm, but that doesnt look big enough, 36mm perhaps??

Anyway, does anyone know definatively (sp?) what size it is. The engine no starts AMF if that is any help.

I have a 2001 TDI and use a 36mm socket. (the size relates to the distance across the flats of the hexagon head so its easy to check with a tape) I bought an 'impact' socket from Halfords as this type has the full hexagon form. With normal 12 point sockets there is a risk of chewing up the corners of the plastic filter head.
