Tdi sport wheel swap offset advice

Hi,
I'm looking for advice on swapping my 17 standard sport 9 spokes for some vag group alloys that are 16 inch. Car is totally standard.

The idea is to run another set in winter while refurb the originals.

My question is what off set can I fit, for example seen some nice seat ibiza with 7j and et of 43. I think current are 35 et so will I need a spacer of around 8mm? Don't want wheels to really stick out anymore than standard and definitely not go inward into arches.

Your sport wheels if original are et38 so you would need a 5mm spacer to make the et43 the same but don't forget if the wheels you buy are a different width or 'j' then that will have an effect too (yours are 7j).

You are actually safer with a lower et of say 30-35 if anything as any rubbing would be on the inner wheel arch linings so bringing them out rather than in would be preferable and the wheels you mention without spacers could potentially rub.

Also don't forget that tyre sizes makes a huge difference too.

Wheels/tyres are quite a minefield when you get into so the safest bet if in doubt is to stick to genuine A2 wheels ?

ET35 is the ideal poke for the A2. That takes the wheel on a 7.5j alloy to directly in line with the wheel arch.

You can then make your own calculations from this where the ET going higher will bring it further in or going lower further out.

Wheels from a mk1 TT or A1 are generally a good option and safe bet if you are thinking of something non A2 but wishing to maintain the genuine Audi quality as they tend to have slighter lower yet compatible offsets (or et's) that suit the A2 well whilst filling the arches more and giving a slightly wider track/stance?

If you're looking for that tyre to the edge of the wheelarch look, then the below rims could be used with 205/45R16 tyres. However, 205/45R16 fitted to 6.5x16 ET42 (for example) would fit a little more comfortably within the wheelarch rather than being "to the edge".

Hi Steve, I'm just not sure the 15 look good on a sport with all the rubber and high side walls for my eyes, I like to drive it fairly strong on corners etc and enjoy it so maybe they'll be too soft?

You might be surprised, obviously they won’t be as good but with a rear ARB you might, I was!

Couldn’t agree more. Yes, to my eye anyway, the 17’ sport wheels are probably the best looking wheel on an A2’s But if you want a car to handle well through the twisty stuff they are so damn heavy and the ride so firm that it comprises steering feel. My favourite driving non modified A2 for bite and chuckability was my Dolphin Grey sport on Pepperpots with Dunlop Blueresponse tyres (185’s from memory) and it also helped dramatically with the mpg. It was nearly as capable as Tonka which has some pretty trick aftermarket suspension on it and 205 sticky Avon tyres.

Interesting!!! Why pepperpots over standard se alloys then? And why aren't 16's the best of both being the middle size and all that? Thanks for your comments

Pepperpots are very lightweight wheels and so reduce the unsprung weight of the car. The original forged and chromed 15" A2 wheels are almost as light.

Pepperpots are also 15" and sit quite far inside the arches if you don't use spacers. If you're after a sportier aesthetic, another choice is the (rare) SE option 5-spoke 16" wheels, to my eyes they're a lot nicer than the standard 6-spokes.
