Temperature gauge

Hi All,

HELP! I have searched through all the posts on temp gauges/ thermostats and senders and I'm not seeing the answer!

Symptoms... temperature gauge doesn't register 9/10. Every once in a blue moon it will register 90 for a short while and then drop as soon as I look at it! It has done this since I bought the car 18 months ago. The heating works well, fuel consumption is consistent (240 per tank) and there is no loss of coolant. There are no obvious faults displayed. It hasn't been on a code reader. Emissions are within tolerances for MOT.

Failed solution... I have just changed the coolant temperature sender and it has made no difference! Cut my hands to shreds getting to it as well! Car is a 2000 (X) 1.4SE.

WHY WON'T IT WORK?!

The only other thing of note in the history is that the entire speedo assembly including gauges was replaced at a cost of £400 about two years ago.

Any suggestions appreciated, thanks!

Hi 04bradders, welcome to the A2oc
The sender unit which fixed the temp gauge problem on my 2001 tdi was the 4 pin green body unit, p/n 059.919.501A. Was this the same on your car?
Although the wandering temp gauge did not throw up any fault codes on my car, i'd recommend a diagnostic scan before spending more time and money checking out the wiring and temp gauge
Sorry I have no words of wisdom or quick fixes for this annoying problem

Cheers Spike
