Temperature Sender 1.6 FSi

Having problems with erratic temperature gauge on my FSi. A search of the forum for similar posts points to the sender unit however most of the posts relate to the 1.4 or TDi.

Can someone tell me where the sender unit is located on the FSi. I'm happy to change it myself, just can't seem to spot it !

Thanks

Simon :)

Hi Simon

I have not seen the FSi engine but suspect the temp sender will be in a similar place to the TDi's. Check for a casting on the back end of the engine where the hoses from the radiator etc connect. The sender should plug into the casting but is probably hidden by one of the hoses

Thanks Spike

Just had a look and there are 2 senders to choose from. Both are on the right hand side of the engine (viewed from front) and connect into what may be the thermostat housing, difficult to tell as there are so many pipes down there ! One sender is at the rear of the engine the other at the front. Both look to be retained with some sort of spring clip.

If anyone has any info on the FSi engine to point me to which one is the guage sender it would be really useful.

Thanks again.

Mine was replaced under warranty and the rubbish Audi mechanic broke the thermostat when replacing the temperature sender so I assume that they are housed in the same unit, although he may just have been randomly smashing things under the bonnet with a hammer.

Hi Simon
I think the coolant temp sender is the one which plugs into the main coolant distribution housing, closest to the cyl block. The other one is a heating resistor - which has a black 2 pin connector block and should be located in a secondary casting which contains the thermostat. This secondary casting is bolted onto the end of the coolant distribution housing.

I changed the temp sensor on my TDi and dropped the plastic 'U' clip during removal. It fell down the back of the gearbox and took ages to find. I'd recommend you get a spare clip with the sender - and tie a piece of string to it during removal or replacement. If it 'pings' while easing it out or into position, at least you can't loose it with the string attached.

Best of luck Spike
