Testing oil condition/component wear

Hello all
This may be teaching some to suck eggs but for those not in the know...

I needed to have my engine oil tested as a diagnosis of the condition of the engine. I purchased a large plastic syringe from ..bay and a length of plastic pipe of 13mm. This was inserted into the sump via the oil level check tube and oil drawn out with the syringe (hard work but no mess). Millers Oils of Brighouse, Yorkshire have a test service available via their web site. They send you a label and a small container with which you send them your sample. Within 48 hours you receive a report. I was very surprised by the comprehensive nature of the analysis for £28. The report identifies the presence of 'wear metals', twelve metallic elements measured in parts per million. It includes viscosity at different temperatures and the presence of calcium, sulphur, phosphorous, nitration, oxidation, water, soot and fuel dilution.
The wear metals can be related to the source of wear for e.g.. in engine oil chrome comes from rings, liners, exhaust valves etc.
Happily my analysis had a huge green tick graphic in it and the words, "wear metals satisfactory - no evidence of engine damage". I punched the air!
The same service is offered for oil in gearbox etc. Millers is a UK company.
