The A2 and dogs

As a prospective A2 owner with dogs, Izzy and Ajax are wondering if the A2 is a suitable dog transport? And what accessories for the A2 are available to make their life easier. Rubber mats, dog guards etc.

I'd really like an A2 but if my buddies Izzy and Ajax aren't happy it's a bit of a deal breaker. :)

I'm not a Dog owning A2 owner, but the previous owner of my car was (it took me ages getting the last few dog hairs up!;)). His two dogs (about the same size as your two actually) were perfectly happy in the back of his/my A2. I think he did take the back seats right out though (as I discovered a few doggy hairs under them when I first took them out!)

One thing I have seen on ebay is a full rear bootfloor rubber mat. They also cover the area where the back seats would have been and side flaps cover the doors.

Hope that helps. :)

no problem

had a large, crufts prize winning doberman in back of mine with rear seats up - nice deep boot much better than Ibiza/Fabia/Polo.

I put my Boarder collie and jack russel in mine, and have no problem's. I use a plastic sheet, and any stray hairs use one of those sticky clothes rollers.

I put my large ( 40kg) flatcoat retreiver in the back of mine, seats up but in the vertical position. I think 2 dogs ( are they Vislas?) would need at least one half of the back seat down ( probably best get one with a split rear seat). I know what you mean, when I went to test drive my car the first thing I did was put my dog in to make sure there was room!

Thanks guys...I need to have a close look at the seating and boot arrangement to see if it works. I did notice there are different rear seat options, bench or split. Does that make a difference to ease of removal, where they fold flat and the like?

Yes they are Hungarian Vizslas. The lad Ajax on the left is just one and Izzy is almost five...and they do like mud. ;)

lovely dogs, yes mine likes mud/water and being long haired........Both seat options are removable, the split seat is simply easier and perhaps allows one seat to remain in stu.

Both can be removed completely and behave similar in working/positions. But the bench in more heavy and the most A2's will be 4 seater, so with the split.

They are designed for the same thing as the Weimaraner, German Pointer etc. Hunt, point, retrieve. They are fantastic dogs and a huge amount of fun. They also love people.

They currently travel about in a Mondeo ST220 Estate which is the size of Albert Hall inside, OK not quite but it is longer than a Volvo V70 would you believe, so they have tons of room. And whilst the Mrs loves the car she had never been completely comfortable with the size although the parking sensors do make a huge difference. And of course the 3.0 V6 is thirsty and will only fall more and more out of favour with Govn't officials trying to find additional ways to extract as much tax out of the motorist as possible, so if I can half my insurance, travel three times as far on a gallon of fuel and cut about £180 odd off my road tax what's not to love about the A2?

We took our two dogs (Alsatian/Lab cross & Collie cross) to France in ours. We have the false boot floor so just folded the seats down and put all their stuff underneath them. We used a normal helfords type dog guard on full height extension placed in the rear footwells. It helps to remove the rear head restraints. Our stuff went in behind the front seats. With hindsight we might have invested in the rear floor storage boxes.

In one of the brochures I have there is mention of the "Dividing net partition". If your two are calm passengers this may be sufficient - only thing is I've never seen one on an accessories list. Skipton might know whether this ever existed in the real world!

Cheers

This is listed in the parts catalogue:

The dealer price is £170, plus the little fixing points, but I have to say, I've never seen one in the flesh.

Cheers,

Thanks guys (skipton & erstens(for the guard info). Accessories ain't cheap are they? But the fact one exists is interesting... :)

When I moved house our GSD obviously didn't want to be left behind - couldn't find him after loading the last box in the boot then looked round to find him sat squarely on the passengers seat ready for the off! I was so angry at him on my leather seat but it was so funny I could do much for laughing.

OK - doesn't help with the dogs in the boot issue, but we lost him to cancer a few months ago and this just made me think of him and smile.
