The Definitive Suspension Parts List

All models continued into 2005 Graham but Audi knew there would be a halt in production that year so they put out the basic special edition model possibly to try and shift stock parts. The price and low specc must have proved reasonably popular as they sold quite well numbers wise towards the end.

Hi Nod,

I about 2 months ago refurbished my £1 project car (02 AMF Tdi SE with OSS and no options barring this) - suspension Bilstein B4 all round ; rear springs were Bilstein B3s, fronts were recycled from my 04 A2 Tdi. Car was on 285k (miles). Also replaced all the various rubber and plastic bushes / shock protectors and bearing mounts front and rear. I can thoroughly recommend the B4 shocks all round and B3 rear springs - in conjunction with SE 6 spoke rims and Uniroyal 195/45/16 tyres and new Febi ARB bushes - the car has a lovely supple ride and very light and lively steering.

If you want catalogue numbers and origins for the parts, I will happily PM them (I was recommended some suppliers here).
Hi Robin,
I'd love to see the parts list, I'm going to do a complete suspension rebuild including anti-roll bar. I've a 2005 Special Edition with OSS, would your chosen parts be good for this?

it was a year ago now so some of the discounts / availabilities might be out ; just in and need to make tea so give me a wee while (or overnight, sorry, been a long day!). Project car just passed second MOT in my hands today - I was having a bit of memory loss about which thread this was earlier, will update later on now I've worked out what I'm talking about.

I've just read a few posts on a2-freun.de, and it looks like someone is giving out poor advice over there.

People reading the German site are fitting 1.4TDI/1.6FSI front springs to their 1.4 petrol engined A2s and ending up with high front ends.

Bilstein 37-147679 matches OEM part number 8Z0411105AL and is therefore only suitable for the heavier engined 1.4TDI and 1.6TSI A2s, not the 1.4 petrol.

Hello everybody,

A few days ago I installed the Bilstein B3 37-147679 in my moving dune BBY with air conditioning without OSS . The production date of the springs is 05/20. It is now 4-5 cm higher at the front. The distance from the center of the wheel to the edge of the wheel arch is now 39 cm. That looks like ....... With my diesel it is only 34-35 cm with a standard chassis.

Has anyone had similar experiences?
What can I do now ?
Are there legal springs from other manufacturers which fit better?

I complained to Bilstein. I'm curious what they say."

would these be suitable for the 75 tdi sport?
If you want the same front springs that the car came out of the factory with, you will need to find the OEM part number.

One way of finding the OEM part number is to find the build code for the front springs. Some of the build codes might be on a white label that the factory stuck in the boot area.

For example, if your car had build code PR-L50 then you have front springs with OEM number 8Z0411105AL

(1)8Z0411105ALcoil spring
3 paint marks
1 paint mark
also use:
blue
silver
6N0 412 249 C
Model data: PR-L50

If your car still has the original springs, or the springs have been replaced with Audi springs that matched the original springs, then you can read the coloured dots off the front springs.

For example, 3 blue dots and 1 silver dot would mean that your front springs have OEM part number 8Z0411105AL.

On the topic of fitting different springs from standard, I put a pair of petrol-spec Spidan springs in my TDi 90 in an attempt to improve the ride. It sat lower at the front as a result (no surprise there) but also the front end became more uncontrolled, so it wasn’t a great success. Then one of the springs broke so I refitted factory spec springs in their place and the ride is now much better balanced, albeit firmer. So this is a long-winded way of saying that despite the suspension’s poor general performance, mucking about with it by substituting non-standard parts seldom improves it. We just have to live with its limitations or buy a Citroen GSA.

and your opinion about koni street +OEM springs?
my a2 Currently fit monroe reflex(uncomfortable after 40k mile).
i look more comfort.

What engine do you have? Sunroof? Tyre and rim specification (eg. 185/50R16 6Jx16 ET35)?

What are the OEM part numbers for the factory fitted front and rear springs and the factory fitted shock absorbers?

It's the same specification as the Pepperpots, ie. 6Jx15 ET38

18L0601025aluminium rim6JX15H2 ET38
5/100
Model data: PR-C6X
8L0601025 Z17avus silver
Period: 0996 - 0800

6J rims are too wide for the 175/60 tyre size. Although it's legal, narrower 5J or 5.5J would give a more comfortable ride with the 175/60 tyre size.

If you want to keep the rims, I would suggest changing the tyre size to either 185/60R15, 195/60R15, or 185/65R15.

Outside diameter of tyres
175/60R15 591mm
185/60R15 603mm
195/60R15 615mm
185/65R15 621.5mm

Percentage increase compared to 175/60R15
185/60R15 2.0%
195/60R15 4.1%
185/65R15 5.2%

With a 1.4 petrol engine, you may find that increasing the gearing has a negative effect on the car's driveability, ie. makes some of the gears too high. For this reason I suggest an increase of no more than 2%.

To keep the gearing standard, maybe consider changing the wheels to either 165/65R15 tyres fitted to 5Jx15 ET28 rims, or 185/65R14 tyres fitted to 5Jx14 ET35 rims.

You should get great comfort from the approved 165/65R15 size fitted to 5Jx15 ET28 rims and improved mpg due to the low drag. The ET28 offset will increase the front and rear track by 20mm compared to the ET38 offset.

If you don't like the look of the relatively skinny 165/65R15 tyre size, then 185/65R14 would be the way to go, IMHO.

As far as suspension goes, use standard springs and shock absorbers.

1.4 petrol front springs

6Q0411105AN 2 red 3 yellow dots

Someone didn't read properly. The correct number for a B3, 1.4 front is 37-147662. They're €30 or so from here: https://www.fahrwerke-stossdaempfer.de/en/audi/a2-8z0

Also bear in mind that the rules as to what is allowed on the car in Germany are infinitely stricter than in the UK and the guy should have read the paperwork before fitting, as it would state clearly not for 1.4 petrol. He will also fail the next TÜV.

What are your build codes?

Or what is the OEM number of your front springs when it left the factory?

As you can see below, if you have build code L50 then your car left the factory with 8Z0411105AL front springs. If your front springs have 3 blue dots and 1 silver dot that would also show that your front springs have OEM part number 8Z0411105AL.

These are just two front springs that the 1.4TDI might have left the factory with, but there might be others.
