The definitive tyre / wheel size thread

Thank you both. I'm glad it's ATS being dense and not me. It's donkeys years since I've had to put tyres on a car. Blackcircles haven't rung back yet. I'm hoping they refund my money easily. Will try Halfords next I think, but can't do that until I get my money back from Blackcircles

Hi can anyone help me please?
I need new tyres and currently have 185/50/R16 81v. I need new ones and was struggling to find places that had these. If I put my number plate in, it came up with others including 195/45. I looked on here and it seemed as though that was OE for the A2 so I ordered them.
I just went to have them fitted and they said 195/45 is not OE for A2's and you can only have one size of tyre and for mine it is 185/50/R16

I'm now confused as if cars can only have one size of tyre per when size, what is this list for please?

I must admit that I'm losing my love for Mabel a little at the moment. I've spent £800 on a stainless still exhaust that has failed to sort the cat fault code and now I've spent £350 on new tyres that I can't have fitted so she will now fail her MOT tomorrow. The temptation to get a personal lease on a Fiat 500 for £160 a month is quite strong. At the moment

Sorry for being so grumpy

Isn't there a member on the forum that can fit the tyre's for you? I would be glad to help you out and fit them, but being in the Netherlands is no help......
Surely there must be someone here with tyre equipment!

Good luck, hope it works out fine!

If i was a bit closer to your location i would have words for those tyre fitters, and trust me they would be fitting them afterwards

The only stipulation with what tyres you fit is that you don't have different size tyres on the same axle and that they don't rub on the bodywork anywhere.

It sounds like you are having 4 tyres fitted anyway so its utter nonsense.

What's their number Teresa, do you want me to give them a call for you?

I nearly had a similar problem with Costco tyre fitters a while back with the A6, in that they wouldn't fit anything other than the "official tyre size" that is listed on their computer system. Their excuse was that is was something to do with their insurance, and didn't want to get sued by anybody if they had an accident. It soon changed around when I suggested they check against the correct model, and being winter tyres rather than the summer ones they were looking up, otherwise I would take my business elsewhere.

Hi Teresa,

This is nothing new, I had the same hassle when I dropped down from 17" to 15" at Halfords through Asda tyres. It is just the tyre place guarding their back against being sued later for fitting non OE size in case of mishap. My case was different in that I had my replacement wheels in the back of my A2 and eventually they agreed to put the non OE size tyres on the wheels but would not fit to the car, which I had to do when I got home.

Now my point for everyone. Maybe the tyre fitter has a point in that 195/45/16 is not on the list inside the petrol flap, I just assumed Brett's(@bretti_kivi) listed OE's are correct but it begs the question why is this size not on the flap sticker?

I hope blackcircles sort you out with the tyres since they most definitely should. If you need your car given a VCDS scan and reset ahead of your MOT tomorrow just let me know (I've moved, but am still in Norwich).

It sounds like this is their policy as apposed to stupidity, although it is a stupid policy :)
Thanks Steve. The bizzare thing is that if you put the number plate in to Blackcircles website, they say I should have the ones I have bought. ATS say that is wrong. Is silly. Blackcircles haven't rung back so I will be demanding my money back in the morning and will go to Halfords

Thanks Steve. Ah, I hadn't noticed your car had gone. I did wave at you the other day as I passed you but not sure if you saw me.
Thank you. It's ok - it does come up with fault codes but they will reset and stay off for a few offs and ons so it will be ok. The garage know the car well. If they agree, I may perhaps be able to get the tyres from ATS and get my garage to fit them.
I hope you are happy in your new place

I'm surprised that BlackCircles neglected to respond, not a good advert for their 'customer service'.

I am pretty sure under the distance selling regulations you are entitled to a full refund,so I would send those tyres back ASAP and go to somewhere more customer friendly.

Thank you. Thankfully she passed her MOT without the new tyres and my garage have recommended somewhere so I'll get my money back and go there. Thank you for all your help everyone. This is such a fab forum ?

Phew - I thought we were gonna lose you then T!
