The End?

I've secured a replacement ATL engine now, with a turbo, injectors and fuel pump included and WOM will be sending the turbo off for reconditioning when it lands with them - don't know if the plan is to use Turbo Dynamics, but I'll certainly look into the upgraded thrust washer. How much is it out of interest?

I've also asked the boys to look at replacing the oil pump/balancer shaft chain and tensioner, but they're apparently having issues sourcing parts.

And finally, I have just obtained a replacement A2 for the times when it's too icy to safely use the bike for work. It's a Y reg black TDi with 5 seats which is a bonus. Needs a little tlc - a new mirror controller, a few other little bits and bobs of trim, but it drives really nicely and it's good to have an A2 back on the drive, even if it's not Tank. The replacement, T2, will be up for sale when Tank is ready to come home from hospital, so if anyone is in the market for a 5 seat diesel, let me know.

Thanks for the feedback on Owen Developments - I'm not sure who WOM have ties with for reconditioning, but I'll go with their usual supplier, who presumably has done many a variable vane unit in the past.

Hi Michael,

It was Turbo Dynamics who did all the work on my turbo. It's all covered in Section 4 of the TDI120 thread: https://www.a2oc.net/community/index.php?threads/tdi120-my-new-engine.32986/#post-281491
All in, it cost circa £600, though they did a lot, lot more than just fit a 360° thrust bearing. I imagine that a majority of the cost was the billet compressor wheel. Since I had that work done, I believe WOM have only used Turbo Dynamics for any turbo reconditioning, though I could be wrong.
The downside of a 360° thrust bearing is that there's greater friction between the bearing and the back of the compressor wheel, meaning a tiny increase in turbo lag. However, I suspect that'll be imperceptible on a VGT turbo.

Cheers,

Tom

Thanks for the pricing info Tom - I've got a feeling that it'll come in a fair bit cheaper than that, as I'll be obviously using the standard compressor. Rob is sourcing an EGR kit from Allard too and we should be moving on quite nicely over the next week or so, then obviously, stopping for the Xmas break.

Use the new runaround this morning for the first time in anger - such a nice little runner and you forget just how much quicker the cabin gets to temperature with a Webasto heater, which this one has. Also on the 15" chrome wheels and the ride is sublime in comparison to Tank, but I can't go back to that wheel size now, due to the brake upgrade.

With the festive period interrupting things, progress hasn't been as swift as it would otherwise have been. However, Rob & Marcus have taken delivery of the new donor engine and have partially stripped it to see that it's a good one, which it appears to be. The head will be skimmed a touch whilst it's off, as there's a tiny amount of pitting around the channel edges and it makes sense to do so. The turbo has gone off for re-working and I believe that the boys have sourced all the kit needed to renew the balance chain and oil pump drive components.

It's coming together - I'd expect to have Tank back in one piece around the end of the month, maybe the start of Feb. Can't wait!!

Pressed ‘Like’ there, then remembered you don’t approve of the ‘Like’ button, so quickly unliked. Looking forward to your update when you have Tank back.

I am tempted to like your message there, but as I do indeed despise the like function for it's facebook-ness and it's bias (where's the don't like option??), then I will refrain!

Sorry Skipton, but I just liked your post too! I'm on here today getting some info on new tyre as I need two new front ones (again!) and I've just been reading your post re tank.
So pleased that Rob and Marcus can help. I was beside myself two years ago when mine was written off due to being in the middle of a three car accident, but I got the greatest Christmas present ever when WOM put her back together again.
My soon to be 16 A2 is up at WOM next week for a service and a few other bits. They do a great job.
Hope you are back on the road again together soon

Ok, so a further update:

The chaps at WOM have been very busy and have pretty much got Tank back to health - they've rebuilt the donor engine and fitted a new oil pump/balance chain, skimmed the head, fitted the reconditioned turbo and re-fitted all the ancillaries. As such, there's only a few jobs to do and then Tank will be back on the road.

Some photos of the rebuild for your amusement.

In preparation for Tank's return, I've now listed the replacement (dubbed T2) for sale in the marketplace. This will hopefully soften the blow of the huuuuge bill!

I know I’m being nieve no doubt it’s on here somewhere but who and we’re is WOM ? they sound like proper engineers not many engine builders left that are highly recommended..

Good news Michael. An A2OC stalwart lives to fight another decade. ??

Great photos. I haven't seen the engine from the angle in your first photo before. I didn't realise just how big the balance weight is on the crank.

The photos are courtesy of WOM - I can take no credit for them.

Yes, I am so looking forward to getting back behind the wheel of my cherished little Tank - and to another 15 years of ownership, at the very least.

It's nice how things have worked out - I was responsible for fitting cruise to WOM's A2 back when they first got into the model and now, a decade on, the boys are rebuilding my little aluminium chum.
