The Great Music and Hi-Fi thread.

Whilst I may be mischievous, I am being serious when I say that although Sir Patrick Moore was a man with an astounding expertise in his field, he also held some truly odious beliefs and was incredibly racist too.

I do not mention this lightly or without personal knowledge - I've had the 'privilege' of working as a sound supervisor on a couple of television shows he was on and some of the things I overheard when he was not on air really saddened me.

But back to records and having grown up with vinyl, I couldn't wait to get my first cd system, which I did when I was around 15 years of age - a Kenwood stack system, and it was the first year that Kenwood traded as such in the UK, as before then, they went under the name of Trio.

Anyone here been to Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club in Soho?

I'm going to see Ulrich Schnauss in concert next month, the venue is an old church, it should have amazing acoustics so I'm really looking forward to it.

Sadly Skipton, there are a great many folk whose opinions and beliefs leave a sour taste in many decent peoples mouths, it's how the civil and balanced-of-mind deal with the repercussions of those ill-informed folk that sets the foundations for the future.

Indeed. Even a cursory glance through his opinions reveals racist, mysoginist, xenophobic and homophobic attitudes. Whilst he was a man of many talents, I'm fairly sure I'd not want him as one of my mates.

The Bristol HiFi Show was interesting today...

The system that most captivated me was a superb Michell/Sugden/ProAc system - not cheap by any stretch of the imagination but it was just pure musical bliss. They had a varied range of LP's from classical through to jazz, blues and prog rock, every album just sounded so natural.

The other system that sounded fantastic was a mid-range Arcam CD/amp combo playing through JBL L100 Classic speakers, a design that harks back to the mid-70s I think. For such a large speaker it sounded so articulate picking out fine detail in percussion and guitars yet had a strong and tight hold on drums/bass guitars but yet again, not a cheap speaker.

Pretty much everything else in the demo rooms sounded awful, even in isolation, from budget through to obscenely expensive.

I sampled Chord Electronics minuscule Mojo and Hugo 2 DAC's with a pair of Focal Elegia headphones, suitably impressed (the Hugo 2 is stunning), I decided to be sensible and buy a Mojo before I left the show...
A short while later I sampled a few headphones but I was very impressed with Audeze's LCD2 Classic, a very smooth sound and supremely comfortable.

They had the Chord Hugo 2 at a huge discount, they also had a generous one on the LCD2 Classic's so I bought them both.

I think I'm now on the lookout for a Michell Gyrodec turntable, not only does it sound fantastic, it also looks stunning!

Mark Hollis, front man from Talk Talk passed away yesterday. A very talented man, taken away far too soon, may he rest in peace...

Indeed, saw this and was saddened. This is one of my top 10 choons probably...

Yes that track it’s in my top 10 ...my era ..very sad ? mark was only 5 days younger than me .scary ..it’s all I’m hearing lately ..

That is very sad indeed Paz, i liked talk talk very different from everything else at the time, think i have an album of theirs on vinyl still.

You mentioning this made me think of this Gem you never hear nowadays and good for the HiFi.

Thought i would start this thread as they're seams to be some enthusiasm for it.:)

My favourite speakers, not my pair but ones dressed in piano Santos Rosewood finish.
