The Great Music and Hi-Fi thread.

I've heard PMC speakers before, as you say, the bass is full, warm and dynamic for such small enclosures.

As much as I'd love to make my own headphones I'm not entirely sure I'd have the patience to realise their full potential with the care and attention required to really make them sing.
Have you got a link to a website for more info please...?

I'd like to hear a good pair of electrostatic cans like Stax.

They don't take much setting up at all really, just a good DAP as a source (Fiio X5 Mk3 for me)

And many more guides. Just search for make your own Grado style headphones for more.

And rather than using a separate DAP, if you have an i-device, use that instead with something like VOX, which can play back higher resolution files. Also, get a good DAC, something like the Chord Mojo, which is fantastic at drawing detail out of your digital files.

Stax cans are ok, but not my cup of tea as they can sound too 'digital' (not that I dislike digital sources), and take the soul out of music.

The Fiio X5III isn't your average DAP - I don't think I need more than 24/384Khz sampling, 512GB is perfectly adequate storage, and I usually use PowerAmp for playback. I did once try to use an ipod with a Fiio DAC plugged in, but there were far too many wires going all over the place and it never felt "complete".

If I'm at home (less time listening on headphones at home) the same 325s plug straight into my Schiit gear.

Not knocking standalone DAPs at all, it's just that to me, it's another piece of kit to lug around and keep charged/synced etc.

I hate the comic, but it's a fairly good guide on using a piece of kit that a lot of people already carry around with them to play hi-res music. I know it means buying a good DAC, but that can be used to make all sorts of other bits of kit sound better and it's not that big to carry around.

And for something that can handle 32bit/768kHz files, it's actually a bit of a steal at the price.

Here's mine, sadly can't take a photo of it with the iPhone attached, as I'm using the iPhone to take the picture!!48275

Hey guys, many thanks for all the advice/info it's very much appreciated.

I shall while away may hours reading up on the Grado's and DIY sites over the next few days.

This place is such a bad influence, I've bought a mint A2 and am now seriously considering buying a used turntable, amp and/or DAC and will most definitely be looking to either buy or build (yeah right, who am I kidding?) a nice pair of headphones ? ?

If you go to the show, be sure to check out PMC - I have never heard speakers like them and the bass extension they produce from such slender boxes is astounding.

I totally agree for a change with this one other than what I have pmc are probably best out there which model did you listen to ..?.
The ones I built some years ago used dynaudio bass units and seas tweeters custom crossover 30mm MDf cabinet every speaker mount bolt was located front to back with 25mm dowels and 3” sheepskin lined ..they sounded really nice ..Martin colloms sat and listened to them at my home and really liked them ....

Just pop a cd on then and sit in front of a log fire - you'll get the odd crackle and have the dual benefits of not having to turn the disc over halfway through and also you'l be toasty warm!

The only benefit of vinyl to me is the larger format, giving better viewing of cover art.

You are mr cheerfull mr skipton ? your forgetting the good feel factor of sliding out the record from the sleeve the careful handling and placing on you turntable and watching the stylus lowering for that first crackle before the track starts ...its all part of the whole experience of vinyl for many ..the flicking through the album covers lots of those are works of art not sure your old enough but the yes albums had some great covers I have a Mitchell turntable it’s a piece of art in its own right ..I dont know it’s all gone to clinical ?..

CD and Vinyl both have their merits and both in the right system can sound utterly astonishing, so it's case of knowing whats what and what floats you boat. One needs to remember all of this is just the usual,........... each time a different format comes along too many get sucked into emptying their wallets. ;)

And guess what? Many youngsters are realising this hence why vinyl is making a come back not to mention all us 50 somethings that grew up with it and want to go back.

I went to see Incognito in concert last weekend, found out about the gig on Saturday afternoon and bought a couple of tickets - had a great time, the band are tight and the girls' singing was par excellence.

Here's a video of them playing live back in 2015, they've lost none of their drive and enthusiasm...

Another of their hits...

Talking of music, i couldn't believe my eyes ? whilst we were queuing up for the Imax screen inside the Science museum yesterday,........it was Only Brain May! ? So i could resist shaking his hand. :)
