The quest for the highest mileage A2 and the 200K Club

A few days ago... :)

Bought in july 2007 with 110k km on the clock.

How are you getting 70mpg Trevor? Apart from the six speed of course, what tyres are you running and at what pressure? What cruising speed and driving techniques / style?
It was mostly A roads and motorway - and some of the motorway had a 50mph limit. Otherwise careful driving: don't accelerate hard, don't leave it to the last minute to brake; use the gradients in the road, ie speed up a bit on the downhill and slow down a bit on the uphill and don't overuse cruise control. Cruising speed varies with gradient but 70mph - can't really use 6th gear much below that, and on the uphill sections of the motorway, drift down to 60mph and 5th gear. Treat your right foot as a feather you could say.
Also drive smoothly; I remember that just after Jackie Stewart retired from FI he did some safety work (with Ford?). There was a washing up bowl stuck to the bonnet of the car, part full of water, and he said something along the lines of " ... away you go, and don't spill any ... ".
Currently on pepperpot wheels with Michelin Crossclimates, 195/55 x 15, tyre pressures are currently 28psi all round which is a bit low - normally 31psi front and 29psi rear.
I've got over 70mpg on a few occasions, best is 73.1.

Sorry Martin, missed this, welcome to the 200 club, will add you on.

Update - 278691miles, or 448510km :)
1.2TDI, with quite a modified map for more bhp.

Original engine, NOTHING exchanged except glow plugs, injector seals and oil filters, not even a sensor.

Even original gearbox with no service done except oil changes. Might change that at 500 000km though =)

Very impressive! :)

Not far off... Alison is in for an Oil Pump and Balancer Shaft Drive Chain & Tensioners as well as a Cambelt & associated Ancillaries today.

Was starting to become noisy on the off side of the Engine. I will post pictures of the old bits.

Can I add my recent purchase, it is merely a baby at 200,796, but drives great...got a few little niggles with it as the previous owner obviously had no interest in repairing faults, or even looking into them, first job was to change the door strap as it only opened about a foot, so squeezing in and out was fun to say the least...the rest of the list just got longer and longer as the days went on...what started as a bargain car has soon run away with the wallet...but I love it and was not prepared to break such a lovely car...she has character and many stories I am sure....pic to follow.

Sorry to hear that It seems like a small minority of a2 owners buy them and run them into the ground without spending a penny .. Thank God they’re in a minority good luck with this one It’s gone into right hands ?

How many of you have changed the chain and tensioner which Sarge was talking about?

Mine is currently being changed. What is astonishing is that there are only a couple of extra bits to do while the Engine is out:

Aux' Belt Tensioner
Alternator Clutch Pulley
Cam Cover Gasket
Flywheel Side Crankshaft Seal

And that's it! 242,600+ miles!

A thread like this has been started before but obviously time has gone by so mileages would have increased.

I'll start the thread so that I can update the first post with the current 'winner'.

The only rules are that the car must still be on its original engine. Head work/injectors etc are fine but it must still be the original block and cylinder head.

Also, I know there would be no reason for anyone to lie but please can any claim be backed up by a photo of the speedo showing the mileage.

Current highest miler is:

Imola Yellow (TDI) at 555,555 (348,000 on original engine)

Current highest mileage on original engine

Weetank2 with 356k miles (TDI)
