Hi steveb,

Was the chain scraping the metal below the plastic guide or the case when you replaced it? Would you recomend another manteinace job during the replacement of the chain? I was told that this 1.4 TDIs have usually some play in the axial bushings in the cranckshaft with this mileage.

Kind regards.

Not sure which bearings you mean but yes the chain had worn through the plastic and was rubbing on the metal.

The most challenging part of the job in my opinion is the crankcase oil seal which you need to have a protective sleeve over the crankshaft to fit

I mean the crankshaft endplay thrust bearings.

Thanks a lot for the info. Duly noted, I will replace the chain with the next timing belt service.

With the 1.2 having been off the road for nearly 5 weeks have both front wheel bearings and drive shafts changed, Tonka has been doing the donkey work again and will very soon hit another milestone.

Give it a year and the 1.2 will have overtaken though, all being well. Currently approaching 192,000.

Evening all,

Next week will see Project OEM joining the club.

This joy to drive and spend upto 15 hours commuting a week is currently sat at 199465.

With 600 miles covered each week will see me adding a before and after picture on Tuesday evening, maybe that morning if I do any local errands over this coming weekend.

Edit: Seems my recollection of current mileage was slightly off. It was 199470 when I entered the cabin this morning. Have since edited the post ro reflect. Just arrived at work and here’s the current figures ahead of posting early next week:

Evening all,

As promised, Project OEM (2003 53 TDI AMF) has made it to the list of fame on the way home this evening.

Upon getting into the cabin ready for the commute home from Lincolnshire earlier the odometer looked like this:

Knowing I had only 62 miles to 2Work Towers I had to do a couple of laps of the local roads near home. About a mile away the odometer presented this display:

Followed by a few minutes later parked up on the driveway:

Quite happy with this achievement after a few costly repair scares recently which turned out to be nothing more than deteriorated plastic cooling system parts. A 2 figure repair opposed a 4 figure repair.

Here’s to the 300k club in Autumn 2026!

Kind regards,

Tom

Wow, that is awesome mate! I wonder if that might be the highest A2 in the UK?
Nope, not even half of it - have a look at the first post in this thread, but I understand that @Imola Yellow is now well over the 600k mark. Although the car is on its second engine now, the first one got to around 350k and from my understanding, only died because an Audi dealer killed it during some maintenance. We've seen a few over the 300k mark.
