Today SHE was upgraded with an Audi radio, a Concert 2.
So I can confirm that it can be done to get full functionality with a gen 2 radio in an early (2001) car which is designed to only use gen 1 radios which dont communicate over CAN. No CANbus emulator is needed.

To succeed I needed to supply the comfort CANbus to the radio. I branched out the bus at the climate unit but it can also be found at the instrument cluster.
And it works well, I wasnt sure all required messages were present on the CANbus on these early cars, but Yes.
The button illumination works and the radio powers up and down following the key on and removal.

I also assured I had the K line connected to the radio.
In my case I hadnt from start so I branched that too from the climate unit. And now I can talk to the radio from VCDS.

The car runs well and is reliable.
But the latest days SHE has lit the engine lamp. A check with VCDS gave this:

Yes need cleaning or possibly need new one.
Either way, you'll need vcds or xtool vag401 to do adaptation after that. If you need to drive in the meantime, short distances should be fine, I used to have that code for months, but try to get it done soon.

Yes, it drives without problems so in that aspect it is not urgent but it is soon time for car inspection and they will fail the car due to the engine lamp so I better do this now.
A new valve is on order now. Worth noting that early AUAs do not have the same EGR valve as later cars including BBY cars.

With the car inspection soon due I made a test drive (normally only my partner is the one to drive SHE) and found the handbrake slighly weak and decided it needed attention.

The brake work ended up in more than I had planned. Not only the brake shoes, but also the mounting kit, the plastic gliders, brake wires, brake cylinders and CuNi brake pipes were needed.
Not all visible on the picture though.
I plan to reuse the drums in spite of their rusty outer appearance.
