Thermostat housing and link pipe

Hi all
Had a bit of a nightmare with my 1.6fsi colour storm in the last few days.
The above mentioned link pipe has split draining all my coolant.
At first I thought it was the head gasket but then I noticed the link pipe had a small crack which turned into a large split.
I'm sure I don't have to tell you it's a horrible job to remove the "stat" housing and link pipe.
Now that they are out I've noticed there appears to be a small pipe broken off the housing so the housing will need to be replaced along with the link pipe.
Part numbers :032 121 065 D and 032 121 111 C
Will these parts still be available from the main dealers?
Whilst I have the pipes split I'm planning on flushing the system, are there any thoughts on this, which flushing agents to use etc.
Thanks for the assistance.

The attached may help:

Cheers

Jeff

I had to replace the housing on ours a few months ago. I think the cost is more like £140 and that's with a 10% discount. I'm sure I read somewhere though that someone found it at GSF or somewhere similar for more like £100, so definitely worth shopping around.

Cheers Rob.

Thermostat housing including all seals and gaskets costs 102.60 from Gsf.
A waterpipe ( 032 121 065 D ) was 45 from Swindon Tps but you should really go to dealer and ask them to order it for you.
You need these two to make it good.
Everything's fine with coolant after I had those replaced.

Hi impsport

Unless you have run without anti freeze in the system for a while and the coolant has turned a rusty colour then there is usually no need to flush the cooling system. I'd be tempted to drain the system and refill with genuine Audi antifreeze mixed 50 / 50 with de-mineralised water. If the cooland becomes discoloured after a couple of weeks just repeat the process.

Thanks for the quick replies.
Looks like it's not a cheap item to replace.
Mustang-owner can I ask where you got the price quoted, and are the seals etc included in that price?
If so how can I order from them?
Cheers
Dermot.

Hi Dermot,

I use a software parts catalogue called ETKA, and have the current price information loaded - which is how I know what the current dealer price is.
Some dealers may offer a discount on this price, some may not. It might be worth dropping Stoke Audi a PM (you can find them under the "partners" section from the main Forum screen), as they do offer discounts via the A2OC.

As for what's included - If you look at the Regulator Housing PDF you will notice that part No.7 encompasses several components (the list of components is on page 2 of the PDF). The price listed in the Price PDF is for item 7, so £136.55 is for all parts encompassed by item 7.

I hope this helps, but if not just drop another post.

p.s. If you are thinking about investing in ETKA parts catalogue, it’s software based only and is a right pain to install.

Cheers

Jeff

Right I have managed to get the thermostat housing and link pipe from my local motor factors who in turn got them from TPS in Manchester.
Total for both came to £220.
I'm sure I don't have to tell you it's a pain to replace.
More importantly I'm trying to discover why the link pipe failed in the first place, the pipe seems to have failed with what I can only describe as a stress fracture.
But as the pipe is unable to move once installed I have ruled this out.
I'm now wondering if the coolant was the incorrect grade, type or amount causing a reaction with the plastic.
Has anyone else suffered a similar failure?
I'm awaiting a branch pipe to arrive as I managed to break one of the "Y" piece when reassembling but I also noticed this seemed brittle as well.
Again could this be due to a coolant problem or simply old age?
Anyway thanks for the replies and assistance.

you're not the first with this problem, though it seems reasonably rare. I got a new housing for a nice price through the german club's dealer - it includes the stat, which I thought was a problem. Having then looked at it, we just changed the sensor first and the rest of the housing can wait.

You should be refilling with G12 ++ or G12+ at 1:1 with water for down to -24 or so; I refilled with pure g12++ and used a complete liter. I need -45 or so :)

Hi, I have similar leak proplems, seem its coming from the link pipe not thermstat housing anyone got any tips for best way to tackle this ,access look complete nightmare.

Hello, Can someone show me a real photo of thermostat housing for FSI? It look like this? :

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Thermosta...CarParts_SM&fits=Model:A2&hash=item5897778060 (in auction written that it is for FSI A2)

(found used part)

(found used part)

(found used part)

(from auction)

(from auction)

I ask because in ETKA the housing has four bolts in thermostat cover and that suprised me.

(ETKA - 4 bolts???)

(auction 3 bolts ???)

Maby there is a mistake in ETKA ? Because thermostat from pictures above (used part) are from A2 FSI. That is what seller told me.

Hi it looks to be correct but i would recommend you fit a new part as its not an easy job to fit this part-so the effort to fit a possibly faulty unit is just not cost effective. Also it must be questioned as to why its for sale? most FSI'S will now have covered many miles. buy new and change it once. Ialso recomend that the plastic link pipe is also changed as these crack with age.
hope that helps mike

Try the trade parts specialists, I think they give the best price for the OE thermostat housing if I remember rightly from when I changed mine.

Cheers,

Rob.

OK thanks a lot. So it seems that picture from ETKA is not very accurate.
p.s. I can buy used part for 10 pound and new for 100 so I will take a risk, because it is a big difference in price.

+1 more on a dodgy plastic pipe between the 'stat housing and the water pump. The leak took some finding too. I wasn't sure if I was looking at a head gasket at first, however after taking off the manifold support bracket I can just about see where the connecting pipe is cracked.

Back to the dealer for more parts.

I'll have him on speed dial soon.......!

Looks like I have one of these that have gone pop (the main housing with all the couplings) where is best to get one?

Cheers.
