Thinking about going six speed gearbox...

50,000 miles in our A2 (fourth A2 we’ve had) in the three years we’ve owned it, and the gearbox is starting to get a little grumbly. There‘s been lots of discussion on the 6 speed gearbox options, but I’m just wondering if there are any recommendations for garage / specialist who could complete the conversion for me?

Just at the early stages on this, but would like to look at some options. I’m located a bit south of Edinburgh, but happy to travel too, so quite open to options if there are any further afield.

Yes WOM every time, they lived up to their reputation for me. My journey to getting a reconditioned MYP box installed below…

Others may recommend a PTW but I think the biggest challenge is simply sourcing the best 6 speed box you can.

I agree with this sentiment - I have a BHC-engined car with a PTW but would have been equally happy with an MYP had I been able to find one at an acceptable price. It only cost me 200 quid to buy (right place/right time on Ebay) and about the same again to fit it so I've not split hairs.

Is it an expensive job?

Evening,

As per Post #5, give them a call to work out the final costing. The pricing will depend on if you have the associated starter motor for the 6 speed gearbox or if you intend to continue with the factory A2 starter motor.

I must say I’m also a very happy customer of WOM Automotive who transplanted a MYP gearbox into Project OEM. My specific MYP gearbox was placed in a jig to remove a few mm from the face of the bell housing so the factory A2 starter motor could still be used.

I might even be back there soon for the same surgery for Project 250, third gear is starting to play up and it’s not the oil or gear linkage cables.

Kind regards,

Tom

WOM told me I’d definitely require a new starter motor - given they were so plentiful and cheap on eBay this was the least of my worries. Finding a decent box was a far bigger problem, I found getting accurate information dealing with breakers nigh on impossible, and I eventually got very lucky finding an unwanted reconditioned one for a modest price from @andrewgeorge. The overall cost of the project became pretty steep for me (comfortably in 4 figures of which the starter motor was just a few percent) once new DMF and clutch were factored in. However it was still worth it, it certainly gave Gracie a new lease of life.
