Thrumming at low speed

I'm settling into becoming familiar with the noises my new car makes and have just started to notice that, at low speeds, I can occasionally hear what I can only describe as a regular "thrumming" noise coming from the back. It's fairly quiet, has a sort of beat to it. It doesn't quite sound like a wheel bearing going as it doesn't seem to be worse when going left or right for example. Also it seems to go away at higher speeds. Any suggestions? Could it be the rear drums sticking perhaps? Are there any well-known issues?

Check for drum temperature after a run to determine sticking, but be careful as they could be VERY hot if sticking is an issue.

Cheers,

Mike

Hi Dan
If its not the drum, part worn tyres can sometimes cause a similar noise. If it is a possibility then swapping wheels from front to back would be a way of checking if a back tyre is the culprit

Cheers for the suggestions - will investigate further. Both rear tyres look new, although one is a Dunlop S9000 and one is a Pirelli P6000 (got 3 Pirellis), but can't imagine that would cause the noise?

Hi Dan,

Not sure if this is related, but I had a similar noise on my Astra GSi. It turned out to be an out of shape rear tyre. There was a small cut in the tread which has caused the tyre to bulge. It was only noticable when up on a ramp and you could run your hand round the tread. The tyre was hardly worn!! Once replaced the vibration and soft thumping noise (esp at low speed) disappeared. Get it up on a jack (and stands for safety) and have a feel of the tread pattern, and look for signs of damage to the tyre. Difficult one to find!! So good luck.
