Tick over speed..,

Hi all, got a 1.4tdi 75. I’m sure my tick over speed has increased... positive it was around 850 rpm but seems to have increased to just under 1000rpm. I haven’t fettled with anything but have used different fuel. Normally use texaco super but used shell super. You think this could make a difference?

Well can not say exactly what the recommended idle speed is but my tdi 75 with climate idles at about 950 and always has done.

My 75 AMF ticks over at the same as Audifan’s @ 950rpm

Evening Vanders,

I'll be the fourth TDI owner to state that their A2 sits happily at circa 950rpm.

Seems like your engine is now running better than it was before on the Texaco Super.

I've also always used Shell V-Power since purchasing the TDI. Previously I used to use any cheap petrol in my last commuter and it always responded well to a tank full of the premium stuff.

Kind regards,

Tom

Thanks for the reply’s guys. This now has led me to believe that it was running slow previously. I’ve always used the premium diesel since owning it so maybe it’s finally cleared itself out...?

Does anyone know if the tdi 90 tickover should be different? Mines 1000rpm bang on, but maybe the dial isn’t so accurate

No all the tdi’s are the same speed as per tick over map in the ecu at 945
Likely that the rev counter pointer is out a little
You can check revs in vcds

how does everyone feel about 'premium' diesel - personally I put in whatever is cheapest and drive it like I stole it - but I get that that's not everyone's thing

Fuel can have an affect on idle if the car is running a bit rich, also poor fuel may cause issues with clogging of parts that cause low or increased idle but I can see what @Robin_Cox is saying.
Either way I'd prefer premium fuel as they do have more cleaning properties but it's down to affordability at times.

My Tdi90 also idles at an indicated 1000rpm, and always has done. I wonder if the slightly higher idle, if it is actually higher, might be because of the DMF?

Every TDI 75 I have had (8) have ticked over at around the 950 mark, except one that for some reason and I never found out because it fixed itself, it started to alter between 1000 and 1200 revs, it now stays at 950, the daughter inlaw drives it now so that's how I know.

Not sure if it's related but does the idle speed increase to improve charging rate when the battery is low

Cheers Spike

What I can tell you all is that all of the 1.4 TDI’s are aero idle at 945 rpm in the engine maps

The chances are that the needle on the Rev counter is not accurately positioned if it doesn’t read just under the 1000rpm mark. The needles are on a tapper and can be positioned anywhere. Vagcom as a calibration page for the instrument cluster which sets all gauges at ½ and the Rev counter at 3000 and the Speedo at 100kph (all from memory) so it is possible to check the calibration of the Rev counter fairly easily
