Ticking from engine

Part of this message is quoted from one I sent to mike..

I started the car a couple of days ago, it had been standing for about two days, and the engine was making these screeching, clanging, ticking sound from the engine.

Had a look at the oil dipstick and it was on low (the cross section), had a little of elf 0w-30 evolution crv oil left (250ml), put that in and it was ok while I looked for some more. Found the correct one but it was not elf.

I brought formula Q8 Excel EDX 0w-30 which is to VW 503.00, 506.00, 506.01 standard the same as before.

So I have put a 1L bottle of that in plus that 250ml, the only problem is the ticking every 5-10 seconds coming from the engine is quite unusual. It is like if you had a metal rod and hit it against something else metal.

Is this a normal noise I should be hearing

Possibility; could be one of the PD injection units or valve hydraulic tappets running dry where the cam lobe contacts, see link for info (quite alarming I'll admit) on the 150PD in Golf Mk 4's, same basic engine design, also illustrates perfectly why you really do need that expensive oil in your engine no matter what service schedule you choose.

Thanks I will take it in during the morning and get that extra out and find out what the problem is

Well had an oil change because it had been 10k since the last. It seems like the wrong vw spec oil has been put in. I asked for 0w30 longlife which i had in. They have put this in but it is 503 something. No 506 etc. They said we didnt think it was the right one but as i asked for it put it in. They said 5w30 should be used. What should I do? I know when i looked there was two versions of it. : (

It is actually titan supersyn sae 0w30 vw 502 00. 505 00. 503 01, which looks like it is for petrol engines (mine is a diesel). Are there usually a version of an oil which is the same name (i.e. 0w30) but one for petrol engines and one for diesel?

Hi richard
I know its more expense but I'd be tempted to change the oil for something which meets the VW 50700/50601(longlife) or 50501(fixed service) specs as the diesel PD engines don't take to kindly to running on petrol engine oils.
I've attached the Audi oil spec sheet and a list of Fuchs oils for reference

Cheers Spike

Thanks spike.

I will try and get it looked at again tomorrow, should they not of ordered the 0w-30 for diesels though which is TITAN SUPERSYN SL LONGLIFE PLUS 0W-30. (VW 503 00, VW 506 00 & 506 01).

What is the normal price for audi and a quick service, i.e there gold ebay is £79 which has an oil change dont mind paying a bit more to get a full quick service than just a oil change. I know it is stafford but will try get them to do it down here, as was going home-(2nd) tomorrow so need it sorted, dont want to be using petrol one for 200 miles.

Should I change to one now with is 5w-30, and try get one with 507.00.

You need to change your oil ASAP. If you don't, serious damage to the engine might occur. 507.00 can also be used for fixed intervals.

The noise started again today, the oil level is at max and looks fine. It only happens when the car is at idle engine speed. You may hear the sort of tapping noise from this video. It seems to do it every so often, it is not constant and it does it more if you have more things running such as headlights, radio.

If you listen between the mins of 3-15 seconds. It is quite hard to hear unless you are with the car.

Tried the clutch method ages ago, the econ button doesn't make any changes. Today I got an answer of what it maybe and sounds like.

The rubbing noise from the engine at idle im told is the airfilter case which might be a little loose.
